Part of what really made me go WTF other then Raph's "attraction to human woman is beastiality" rant was Leo hobby of reading Shojo manga called Fruit Basket. That was really weird.

They must have boneless tails with rough texture and that they can take out from either leg hole.

I suppose maybe for a kid's show it looked a bit more modest to designers on some angles. Lest they want to be forced to wear pants like 2014 because viewers are weird like that. Not that many male cartoon characters don't go around pantless half the time as it is... only shirt or pants required, not both.

In the original movie, they left Raph in a tub for lord knows how long.
Hope that there was a spare bathroom in the house. If you wanna talk about awkward, then imagine sitting on the can, looking at a unconscious mutant male Turtle lying in the tub, and then saying "..Uh..how you doing in there buddy?"

Because THAT would be VERY awkward.

I've wondered the same. Poor April. "Raph/Leo, please wake up... But not yet, give me just a minute!" You just have to hope they're completely out and it's not one of those things where they later report having heard everything despite being unconscious.

Maybe the purpose of it is to support it and keep the body inside the shell from sliding out and pulling the skin that attach to it whenever the turtle is sitting down.

If you ever pick up a real turtle and hold it by the shell in a certain position, you would notice that the gravity would pull inside of it down and might even create discomfort.

I think it is part of the body and not artificial because it's purpose too practical.
