When you read a book and it doesn't have a happy ending - and you are completely emotionally unprepared for it.

Seriously y'all, I just spent a week working my way through a (mostly enjoyable and quite well-written) medieval romance novel, only for the two lovers to be declared guilty of treason by the wicked king and they got their heads chopped off.

It was the most depressing thing I've read in a long time - all the more so because, like the rest of the book, it was emotionally well-written - and I'm gonna be in a funk about it for days to come. Because I'm lame that way.

Also the phone company reset everything to the time zone in another state, meaning the alarm on my phone went off at 4.30am and as I'm a sad little member of the rat-race, firmly entrenched in my routine, I heard the alarm, got up and got ready as per normal and didn't realize what had happened until I was already at work.

I'm sleep-deprived and emotionally vulnerable - somebody, hold me!!!

If it's becoming this frustrating, maybe start locking your door at all times? And tell her you've taken on some personal projects and don't have time to chat as often or have unannounced visitors. That's worked for me before (and it helps if you actually do have personal projects).

Yeah, we mostly HAVE started doing that- which is why she ambushes me or others who come over. My hubby even changed his phone number when he got his new phone- just so she(and a few others) wouldn't have the number. He also found a new (and fairly creative, if gross) way to get her to leave- acting as if he's about to puke. (Which he's been doing rather frequently, anyway lately- acid reflux/high BP issues...)

I would, but you're too far away, sweetie! But I feel ya on the book thing. Makes me want to curl up into a ball and cry, too.

LOL it's all good, Marvel... I'm feeling a bit better about it now. It's just the indignity of being caused to cry by a pile of paper!

I know, right?! Then again, I've been known to cry over piles of....celluloid. Yup, I'm one of those who even cry during Disney movies or other sentimentally saccharine films.

It's precisely why I avoid most movies like that. I have enough emotional benders as it is to have what's supposed to be light entertainment join in on the act...

...Weird, since I'm a writer, I should probably watch that stuff a bit more closely for inspiration and other things

Today's gear grinder:

When it turns out that an old yellowed and dried out pig skull I bought on eBay several months ago might have been the cause of a dermestid beetle issue I'm having. I never had issues with dermestid beetles before, even though I tan furs for myself I've yet to have even seen them! Fortunately I'd caught them early enough; one old practice squirrel I did years ago had only a small patch of fur missing and a piglet I did a year ago had a few hairs shed but that was it. I did see some critters, and I vacuumed the heck out of some bigger hides that I had sitting that had a few in them (no damage or shedding though.)

Very aggravating, because they love to chew anything that has natural protein, and thus will happily eat any stored food. I'll also have to be watching and such to make sure they don't come back, which might take a month or two.

I guess the light side of this is, I'm very glad I did the piglet and the squirrel with a washable-fur tan, because it allows me to wash them in hot water and shampoo, so now they smell like Oldspice shampoo.

Seriously though, I hope you left the seller some negative feedback.

I'm a little late and I can't physically hold you, so have a Layton gif instead:

And speaking of Penny, that damn package isn't here yet and I keep asking my dad every day after he checks the mail. Aaaa the wait is too much for me!

Was this post an exercise in the theory that NK has a Layton reaction image for any possible occasion? ...Possibly.

I received a call from my college's dining services a couple of says ago, asking if they could set up a phone interview with me. We set one up for today, and I asked that they use the number for my parent's land line, because my cell phone does not get enough service for phone calls where I live. I gave them the number and everything. Today, I wait half an hour for them to call, and check my cell phone, only to see that they tried to call THAT 20 minutes previously. I tried calling back on the land line, but the number just rang and rang and rang. I'm pretty steamed, not only because I told them which number to use, and they didn't bother to use it, but that the call didn't show up on my cell phone's screen (I was watching it, just in case they tried calling that number). The cell is new, so I guess it's my fault for not having it figured out completely.

I really need this job though, so I'm frustrated.

Hang in there, Net - I'm positive it will have to have shown up by the end of January. Even with delays over the holiday period, I can't see it taking outside of 4 weeks to arrive. Worst-case scenario, I'll just get another one for you and resend at my cost. Perils of me living at the ass-end of the planet, I suppose!

My gear-grind is the fact that we're in the middle of this unbelievably disgusting heatwave which is set to last for the next three days and I'm convinced that I'm going to die. I know I constantly moan about the heat but I don't deal with it well. I'm telling you, humans were not meant to live in Australia. This country is not hospitable to supporting life that isn't poisonous or marsupial.

I believe you Yanks measure your temperatures in Fahrenheit, yes? Well by your measurements, it was 100.4 degrees yesterday.

I'll gladly take some of that heat, please. It's warming up a little here but not enough for my tastes.

I totally know whatcha mean. I remember one time at college a so-called friend was lying on a couch and she looked sick or something. I kindly asked her if she was feeling okay, and the crazy b*tch just flipped her wig out at me. She must've been on crack or something at the time.

It's not just the heat - it's the humidity as well. It's so gross.

Here it's raining, snowing and occasionally a wind on storm level. It's crazy.

On Tuesday, metal plates was flying in the wind and ships had to stay away from the bay. Yesterday it was snowing to almost an inch of snow, then it was gone today cause it was raining and the wind was so bad the rain came horizontal.

I'll trade ya, right now the high temps are slightly below 0 C, and for the time of year, that is a bit warm compared to what we normally get. A few days ago the temps dropped to about 12 F, which would be -11 C.

Yep. All of that above is what I deal with during the summer as well. I'd better enjoy winter while it's still here. We might get a couple of weeks of spring-like weather into late March before we get greeted by 80 degree temps come April.

Meanwhile a few days ago in the American Midwest and Northeast, we had temperatures in the single digits Fahrenheit, or around -12 to -15 for Celsius for the low with windchills reaching -25 Celsius. It was even colder than Anchorage, Alaska!

Don't I know it. Sounds like a typical day in Texas from May to September.

No kidding. I'd like to NOT have to wear two coats to walk to and from work. Too much extra crap to have to take off when I get there.
