Boom. Sums everything up. Best Bay-burn here & all it took is one sentence.

And Commenter 42, could it be....??? You're sticking up for Bay...???

Okay just read through a bit of this thread.

As a fan of Transformers, I can understand why people are rather upset at Michael Bay for Transformers 2 to 4 (I thought the first one was okay). I'm not too fond of the guy's movies either.

In the case of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I can't help but think that all the anger here is misplaced. He just produced it, he didn't direct or write it. Two different people entirely made these movies, aren't these the people you should be upset with?

The thing is, it's been revealed that Bay had a big finger in a lot of the makings of the TMNT movie, from designs to script.

In real life, he's a tough guy to hate. I've always said this mess isn't his fault, at least, not entirely.

Point is, if you really want a film that speaks to the fans, you need to be a fan, or at least understand what they want. It's obvious no one involved was.

It's also obvious that paramount wasn't looking for a film for the fans. It want's wide appeal.

One day they'll realize they're one in the same.

Hey may be "only" a producer, but if he's involved with the money...money as usual buys you the ability to have a voice in something.

Out of curiosity I figured I'd look up the actual duties:

Quote:
http://www.producersguild.org/?page=faq

What does a Producer do?

A Producer initiates, coordinates, supervises and controls, either on his own authority, or subject to the authority of an employer, all aspects of the motion-picture and/or television production process, including creative, financial, technological and administrative. A Producer is involved throughout all phases of production from inception to completion, including coordination, supervision and control of all other talents and crafts, subject to the provisions of their collective bargaining agreements and personal service contracts.
Quote:
http://entertainment.howstuffworks.c...-producer2.htm

A movie producer is the person responsible for making sure an appealing, high-quality movie is produced on time and within budget. That means supervising and packaging the project from conception to distribution to theaters, while interfacing with the studio and managing the work of hundreds of individuals [source: Full Sail].

As you can see, movie producers do indeed have to wear many hats during movie production. Starting at the beginning of the process, here are some of the main producer responsibilities:

Preproduction

Find material from a book or script.
Get the script into good enough shape to attract a director (and studio, if this is not a studio-initiated production).
Secure financing for the film, if it is not being made for a studio.
Choose the director and other parts of the creative team.
Cast the actors, working with the director.
Determine locations and budget.
Decide on cinematographer and special effects.
Hire a production team including crew and producers.
Develop a shooting schedule.
Create a detailed plan of action for production.

Production

Offer creative suggestions to the director.
Handle problems with actors or creative staff.
Monitor production timetable and budget.
Review video dailies, the film shot each day.

Postproduction

Discuss order and selection of scenes with the director.
Review the fine cut of the film after it is edited.
In some cases, polish, revise and restructure the film to create the final cut.
Work with a distributor to secure distribution for the film. This may include showing the distributors the final cut of the film.
Review the distributor's advertising campaign for the film.

[sources: World Book and "Movie Moguls Speak: Interviews with Top Film Producers" by Steven Prigge, 2004]
Although to be fair, Bay is/was not the only producer, perhaps the duties were divided up. But TMNT does strongly reek of his "creative" ideas.

"And ultimately is the producer is the guy in charge of the whole film." -- Sooo he does kinda rightfully deserve just as much criticism as the director, if not more.

I feel the anger is in the right place, just at a level that's ridiculous. You read some of these rants and you have to wonder what the hell they were expecting from a Liebesman/Bay joint. Watch Liebesman's previous movies. Seems like a nice dude but he can't direct traffic. Bay seems to have lost his mind in the last decade, like he's been around one too many concussive explosions on set & is now in a place where he just f*cks around & puts it out there (he probably thinks he's being punk rock, when really he's just becoming Ed Wood). But they took Applebaum & Nemec's lazy screenplay and made a striking & entertaining action movie out of it.

You've met him? By all accounts, he's a nice dude but seems a nightmare to work for. Anyone watched that big making of Revenge Of The Fallen? Long story short, he came across like a giant C-word from front to back. I also think he has a very low opinion of his audience & what they want to see, stuffing his films with commercials & women you're supposed to perv on. Yet his films are always successful, so f*ck, he's probably right.

I dunno man, Paul W.S. Anderson was an Alien/Predator fanatic & had final cut- didn't stop him from making Alien vs. Predator a turd. You just need someone smart, talented & without a bunch of cooks stepping on their toes.

For sure, a lot of the flack the TMNT movie got should be directed at Platinum Dunes and not just Bay alone, but he is the Face of PD. few knows who Brad Fuller is.

Also, you can still make it lighthearted with a Nolan route, you just don't have to make it cartoony. I feel like AoU would be the perfect tone for a film like this: It's funny, but it also has a sense of realism to it.

He most definitely isn't the person you think he is.
All honesty, he's not PURPOSELY trying to destroy the fanbases. He just wants to make new ideas for a movie and doesn't want repetitive things. Don't get me wrong, his ideas are absolute ****, but no one goes to see a Bay movie for story. But, with that said, if he KNOWS he can't make a good story, I think he should stick to original ideas. The action scenes in Transformers 1 are okay, they're actually really good in Transformers 2 because I could see what was going on, they were decent in 3, and they were awful compared to the others in 4. Bay's movies are action movies, we all know that, he just needs to stop making property-based movies.

My biggest gripe with Turtles was that it didn't focus on the Turtles. The Transformers series I can get not focusing on the Transformers to some degree. But Turtles? No, you need to focus on them. Because when they were on screen, the movie was still bad, but it was stupid and lovable because the Turtles were the only thing they got right. I feel like Turtles 2 will be better than Turtles 1, probably because I think it'll be hard for Bay to outdo himself and make a movie worse than 1. Not saying it'll be a good movie, it'll just be better than 1.

I can't really fault him for being a nightmare to work for. Keep in mind, despite the well-deserved criticism, Transformers is a VERY big franchise. It's not surprising of him that he'd run a tight shift over a movie of that size.

Transformers is so big, It caused Paramount to hire a team of Writers, To help them create a Transformers Cinematic Universe, And they got Robert Kirkman, The creator of the Walking Dead to be a part of it.

I really wish someone would leak photos from inside the studios in LI CITY. Im extremely curious to see what is going down, especially with those giant set pieces that look like a sewer set.

Yeah, that's what I meant. XD If it's an origin story that we've seen, he wants a new one, but if it's a plot that involves the Earth being destroyed, then yeah, he'll repeat it all the time.
