I think tumblr is where all the obsessive fanboys/girls of a particular series hang out now. It used to be forums or fan groups, then deviantart and fanfiction.net, but I guess now its easier for them to all hang around tumblr.

Shippers always amuse me in general, because of how angry or defensive they get if you don't like the same pairing in a show that you do. Especially if they like a pairing that was "killed off" because the characters got together with someone else, they go ballistic.

Don't get me started on the yaoi fangirls.

Well in that case, one might think you'd actually be grateful for Tumblr if it attracted the things you don't like away from forums. I mean it's going to exist somewhere either way.

As one of the 98%, I agree that you're totally spot-on.

Dude, you haven't seen brutal until you've seen a shipping war. Try telling a Destiel fangirl that you don't ship it and watch the fireworks begin.

Seriously though, I think you find obsessive fans all over the internet - that's basically the point of the internet. The holy trinity, as it were: obsessing over things, bitching about things and porn about things.

Because people love to judge and hate on places with an overwhelming majority of marginalized people.

Know why there's more fan stuff on tumblr?
Because that's where the people you shouted out of here went to make a place for themselves.

Shipping wars totally existed pre-Tumblr. Shippers and fangirls have been hanging out on DA forever and back in Ye Olde Internet days, there used to be fansites set up just for specific ships which would feature artwork and fanfic only of the One True Pairing. Deviations from the OTP on those sites were not allowed. It's not a new thing and IMO, no sillier/stranger than sports fans having a favorite team and disliking other teams. They're both pretty much the same thing, one's just seen as more socially acceptable than the other.

Some of my favorite fan fic writers have a Tumblr, though I haven't really been on the site myself. I have thought of getting one to use for my stories and just to write about certain things. I'm still debating about it though.

I always thought Tumblr was for pictures. I don't use it nor do I have an account there, but sometimes when people link to things, like pictures, it's on Tumblr. I didn't really know it was like a social media site. The only social media site I actually truly use is Facebook to keep in touch with my folks stateside. I use the PM function a lot with friends/family back home and here in Japan. Cheaper than text messaging and stuff.

Getting down to it, I can't get into many media sites at all and usually have no idea what most people are talking about. There's some other thing that was mentioned and I had no idea what it was. Something called Instant something. I forgot, but seems many people use it.

I just hang on message boards....like this one. lol Others I'm a member of, but I usually visit like every so many weeks. lol

So yeah, Facebook and message boards I frequent and of course Youtube.

Shipping junk existed before Tumblr, though. How long has Tumblr been around? I've been a member on the Chamber of Secrets forum for at least 10 or 11 years (probably...I haven't frequented the site regularly since the 7th Harry Potter book was put out years ago). I know that book 5 was about to be released and I just wanted a place to talk about it and found that forum. Anyway, round about that time, they had the "Love Threads" so that people could discuss pairings and whatnot. The main ships debated were Harry x Hermione/Ron x Hermione/Harry x Ginny, etc. It got so bad, they had to ban users and even locked the threads forbidding anyone to start up any shipping discussion. Some of the users were okay. They attacked the posts or debated...you know, like you're supposed to, but others broke the rule of attacking the posters or either character bashing (usually Ron or Ginny). On that board, character bashing was (or still is) against the rules. For example, claiming something negative about a character that's not actually true and just your personal bias would be against the rules. "Ron is too stupid for Hermione!" "Hermione ruined Harry's chances with Cho because she gave him bad advice....on purpose and caused them to break up!" That argument about Hermione ruining Harry's date on purpose always bugged me since it wasn't true...but never mind that. The stupid Ron one too when he clearly wasn't. Lazy in school =/= stupid and Harry's school marks were about the same as Ron's and Harry actually picked his classes based on what Ron picked....but never mind.

So yeah, some posters continuously broke the rule because they were so vehement about their ship, but to try and prove their points, they would resort to bashing the competition or ignoring canon. I'll go back to that Hermione ruined Harry's date example and since it's pretty off-topic, I'll use a spoiler tag...

Spoiler:
So, on Valentine's Day in book 5, Harry had a date with a girl (Cho) he'd been crushing on since book 3. She'd been dating another student the previous year, but he was murdered and she never actually properly mourned the death, given how she was in the previous book (very social and such, surrounded by friends, happy and such)...book 5, she was conspicuously alone outside of just one friend and she was weepy a lot. Anyway, during the date, Cho wanted to talk to Harry about him since Harry was the last person to see him alive. He brought the body back. By observation, it just showed me that Cho is the type who needs to talk about stuff. Harry's character (in canon) is the opposite. He's not the type to talk about stuff and internalizes a lot of things that may bother him...in the books. He's the type to avoid things, hence his constantly brushing off Hermione whenever she gets on him for something. He hates conflict and confrontation.

Anyway, Harry was to meet Hermione later on that afternoon. She asked him to meet her and it was urgent. She told him that morning about it and that it was important but didn't say why and rushed off. Typical Hermione behavior. She's done that all throughout the books. Give vague information about stuff.

Anyway, slight argument with the pair and Harry met with Hermione, explained what happened and Hermione explained why Cho reacted in such a way and what he could've/should've done. People for the ship of Harry x Hermione said that she purposely sabotaged the date and gave the advice too late. Unless she's psychic, how would she have known, anyway? That wasn't what broke the two up anyway. After finding out why Harry had to meet up with Hermione, Cho had no problems with it.

What broke them up was Cho's friend's betrayal, getting all of them in trouble and during their argument, Harry mentioned not only Hermione, but Ron too...but never mind all that.

So yeah, junk like this has been around way before Tumblr, I'm sure.

I don't even get shippers. Why care THAT much? I understand if you like a pairing, but literally fighting other real-life people over it, and then hating fictional characters...is just utterly idiotic.

I mean there's people who defend ships like its a religion or their sexuality. They feel if you don't like their ship you're morally attacking them, as if someone made fun of your religion or homophobia or something that.

Makes you realize these people need to get their head in the real world, and arguing over fictional character romances is not a big deal at all.

Yeah, this is how I feel regarding shipping. Debating them could be fun. In the case of Harry Potter though, since that's the only fandom in recent memory anyway where I was part of a community where people were debating them, the series was still going, so the debates were more like, "What pairings will this series end with?" "I think JKR will include.... because...."... junk like that and actually presented a logical, sound argument and then someone could counter that, etc. No problems whatsoever. Then you have the vehement ones who took shipping debates way way WAY too seriously. I know I couldn't understand it. Shipping, imo, is just supposed to be fun...not treated like a life or death thing and being very rude to those, like you said, that disagreed or may have proved a fallacy in their argument. One argument that popped up was that Ron would domestically abuse Hermione because the two characters bickered...which was just ridiculous. It takes two to argue...

Oh, Pokemon and Digimon. Meh...not really debates...more so like, "I like A x B", but I did debate in the Pokemon one years and years ago. lol Ash x Misty vs Ash x Gary, but those involved in those debates were actually civil and decent and actually fun....but looking back now, they did treat it as serious business, just not like the vehement ones I mentioned earlier in the HP community.

I think the difference is with pokemon is since the series never ended, and has so little shipping in general, there is no real point. The writers largely dropped Misty's crush on Ash during Johto anyway besides the last episode, probably because that point they knew the series was going to go on for years and years and realized there was no reason to keep a pairing alive especially when they were going to axe her from the series.

Had Pokemon ended after Kanto, or even Johto, then maybe there would have been a shipping resolution. Not now though.

But that wasn't known at the time and for me, I never did see the Johto stuff. The only series I've seen in full is the first series and the Orange Islands. Anyway, those debates were about 15, 16 years ago. Either way, they were done in fun...the debates.

I agree that shipping can get out of hand when people argue about it to the point of insanity, but at the same time, I get why people are loyal to their certain pairings. And SSJup, I remember the Harry Potter stuff as I was a member of that forum as well, and people definitely had arguments about the pairings in that fandom. I haven't visited the site since the seventh movie came out and I heard it was shutting down, but then it didn't from what I know. Anyway, people just love their pairings and while we may not agree with it or how out of hand it can get, I say let them duke it out and just watch the fun.

Hey, I've seen Splinter/Shredder fics, so I get it. After all, Tom did say that had "strange likenesses" so there you go.
