Rise took a long time to grow on me and the Sophie run is objectively bad. But I think the discourse being “TMNT is WOKE now, I’m mad!” turned a lot of people off.
I hate this whole thing on Reddit and I guess other places where voicing criticism gets met with condescending remarks like "TRY FOCUSING ON THE POSITIVES INSTEAD! LIFE IS MUCH BETTER THAT WAY!" which remind me of light teenage bullying. And they accuse you for being angry just because you wrote a "wall of text" aka a post that's longer than 2 sentences. Clearly society is breeding new generations of illiterates.

Exactly. 'Try focusing on the positives!!!'. We do. I don't think anyone here actively hates the older stuff, the first 100 issues of IDW TMNT, the latest games and crossovers, etc.

Dislike maybe, disagreements, sure, especially for those that think the IDW turtles should kill, but nobody hates those interations the way we hate the Bayturtles, Rise and Mutant Mayhem.

When the negatives outweigh the positives for a wide margin, you're gonna fail your assignment/essay/test.

I can imagine those kids in school or university now. "a 40% grade? Why did my teacher fail me?! Why didn't he focus on the positives instead!"

Exactly. If you want us to think of the positives, make more positives. Stop making all this Rise/Mutant Mayhem crap.

Anyway my example doesn't just apply to TMNT sadly. But to pretty much anything. As in "you know I like this series/movie/game/wtv but there's a couple of parts that bothered me and this work's legacy might have a negative point or two as well".

It's often met with anger Or something like me criticinsg FFX's post-game being insanely hard and someone telling me "akshually it's 100% optional. you don't have to do it." Yeah, no **** Sherlock?! That's why it's called POST-GAME. What, I can't criticise the post-game of a video game I PAID FOR?! Piss off.

Yes. I’m sure I said this earlier in this thread, but I don’t really see anyone actually discussing any comics/episodes as they come out. It’s 90 percent just “this came in the mail” with a picture of some widely available TPB sitting on a coffee table.

Well… where’s your review, pal?!?

Yeah, I know what you mean. Then there’s also a strange hivemind effect when they all agree something is bad. Like any Marvel movie community will just trash certain movies for no reason (TIH and Thor 2 being the whipping boys).

The TMNT equivalent would probably be the Image run, which I almost always found that its haters were just people who never actually read the damn thing lol. I think a lot of people woke up and got over that since the Urban Legends reprints.

I grew up going on message boards as a 10 year old kid whose English was good enough to get perfect scores on English tests but not good enough yet to be fluent in online discussions. So I remember very well getting insulted by American kids in video game forums online with lines such as "LEARN GRAMMAR, RETARD!" and "MAKE SOME EFFORT WHEN CREATING A NEW THREAD". If you opened a new discussion thread in a message board without adding your own input, you'd get flamed and then your thread would get locked since you obviously did not make enough of an effort to promote discussion. But apparently Reddit does not understand this. Creating a thread where you make a post longer than a few lines will get you replies like "I ain't reading all of that" and "you forgot this in your essay/wall of text!"

So that's why a lot of Reddit is like that. Just people dropping an image or photo of a something and asking "what do you think of this/that/him/her?" without the OP giving his own thoughts a well. In the 2000s he'd be scolded by mods and accused of post whoring, but on Reddit no one accuses him of karma farming even though he clearly is doing so.

That hivemind is a consequence of the karma system. Which is basically censorship.

Although I still don't like Campbell's run, but if this interview is true, then I guess IDW should responsible for their poor management. Escape from New York arc might be more interesting than +30 slice of life arc. If I remember, Campbell did said she plan to kill Old Hob

It's wild how it has flipped, and in a pretty brief timespan. People have really killed their attention spans with social media to the point they can't be bothered to put in much effort anymore.

Like I've commented before, too, that low effort stuff is annoying and too much of Reddit is exactly that. I will scroll through to see if there's anything interesting on the TMNT sub, but in most cases there is very little. I mean, I don't care how two characters from unrelated franchises would interact. How about you come up with it, maybe even as a short little fanfic blub if you wish, and if you think it's fun enough to share THEN maybe post it? Just asking how they'd interact isn't a discussion, it's simply a prompt as a request that other people put in the effort to entertain you with your idea.

Then there's the other part you guys were pointing out, this "can't be negative!" trend that probably permeates nearly every fandom anymore. Granted, plenty of them are probably young and sure, a lot of us were more sensitive at their age and quicker to react, too... but plenty of older people have jumped on that oversensitive bandwagon, too and these days that reaction isn't even to anything personal (which would be justified), it's about something they simply like but have made it FAR too much of their own personal identity so they act like it's a personal attack if you dare even critique something, let alone dislike it.

That just takes WAY more energy than I can muster to care what some internet stranger thinks of something I happen to want, like, or dislike. Get mad at my opinion and well, I guess I should be flattered that you find my views so important?

Well said, Indigo.

Part of the problem is just the format of Reddit. If someone makes a long post here, I might not have time to read it all immediately. Or maybe I don’t have time to respond until later. But on Reddit you have to react immediately or it just gets buried.

I also hate how old posts get their comments disabled. Whereas here you can necropost in a thread from 20+ years ago lol. (It drives me nuts that mods used to lock episode discussion threads after one week when the 4kids show was coming out).

It's nothing new, really. When I first came to this very board and said the 2007 movie was sh** I was lampooned left and right by everyone except some -- but not all -- of the sweet old ladies around here who all wrote TMNT slash fiction and/or TMNT sexual fantasy/Mary Sue stuff. Who are long gone now.

It was a very weird rationale, even to consider at the time. Apparently if you only really care for Mirage, the first movie (mostly) and the Archie comics... that means you don't care about TMNT. As if liking The Current TMNT Thing is some sort of prerequisite to be validated as a valid fan.

Once upon a time, it was against the rules here to say anything negative about the FW show lol.

"Look at the name of the message board, creep!"

I seem to remember getting told that a few times, way back.

Then along came things like Discord and made that even worse because anything you say is buried immediately if it's active. And what I've heard of TMNT channels sounds like this "cesspool" is tolerable compared to THAT toxic wasteland.

I mean I still randomly get replies on reddit threads I made like 5+ years ago. I would never know if I didn't get the alerts/notifications on reddit. People be posting on long dead threads from half a decade ago.

Are the people who run the subs able to set how long until they close on? Because I do sometimes see old ones that are still open after a few years, yet some others close much sooner.

It might depend on the sub. I have some old threads on r/movies or r/television from 5-7+ years ago that still randomly get replies to this day. I don't even know how people find them or bother to post, it's not like anyone is going to read what they say in thread from half a decade ago. I just always get alerts on reddit whenever someone replies to something I posted.
