That’s crazy to think about.

Also crazy… that’s how long it’s been since IDW #1 dropped.

I wasn't around here yet in 2004 when the issue came out but it could be the most active people around here were mad at Laird because of lettercol stuff. A bunch of fans that were reading Vol. 4 just stopped being active TMNT fans because of that damn lettercol. But I'm not really on their side about that at all, pushing and bullying Laird to get their way. Even the political stuff.
I might be wrong, but I feel like nobody really turned on him until the “April is a drawing!” whining happened.

But yeah, **** anybody who ever talked sh*t to Crazy Peter!

That might have been a partial catalyst, but every time anyone was suggesting he pick up the pace, or do this or that, he'd fire back with stuff like, "Don't like?! DON'T READ!" (which oddly pre-dated that sort of mentality at large in the comic book industry).

So right or wrong, people largely did stop reading. And also being TMNT fans in general. It was an odd kind of time.

The initial hype of Vol. 4 besides Laird writing is were that all the Turtles were "normal" again and it felt back to basics. Leo wasn't losing a hand, Raph's face wasn't scarred, Don wasn't a cyborg. I remember a ton of anti-Image posts in the early 2000's with people glad Laird was here to, "correct the ship" and bring things back to normal.

But then IMMEDIATELY Raph became bitten by vampires and became GameraRaph, Don got shrunk to pint-sized and controlled a robot body, and so on.

Yeah that never made any sense to me. Like most Image detractors, Peter says he didn’t like the maiming and specifically noted cyborg Don as something he took exception to. And then, yeah… look what he did right after establishing the new post-Splinter status quo.

Also Michelangelo’s arc in Vol. 4 is probably the worst thing any of the turtles has ever gone through in any iteration outside of Last Ronin.
