Roninverse The First Ronin.

IDW continue to flog the corpse of the dead horse that is the Roninverse.

New prequel set in 1600's feudal Japan Written by Stan Sakai and Interiors by Soo Lee.

https://www.thewrap.com/culture-life...-release-date/

Man, I wish it was April (no pun intended) first.

I'll give it a go. Hopefully it'll be released in Hardback with Return for New York so I can avoid double dipping.

I like to see it as a Stan Sakai story rather than a Roninverse story.
The Yokai Turtles are an intriguing idea.
Also Kameyama means Turtle Mountain.

They plagiarized Powder:

A concept for the TMNT I came up with. Basically, the idea here is that their story would take place in 16th century feudal Japan. Their sensei, is Hamato Yoshi, a wise old monk, who raised them at his monastery, in secret. They're not mutants, but rather guardians of the earth, sent by the gods. Yoshi keeps them hidden, for fear of their safety, but trains them physically, & shapes their minds in the higher arts. Splinter is a mere pet rat, one who Donatello keeps with him at almost all times. Donnie would be the outcast of the group, keeping to himself, often silent. Leo is his traditional Bushido self, but also a spiritual guide/healer. Raph's the muscle. Still very much the enforcer of the group (in battle, at least), but despite his harsh appearance, he's more of a gentle giant. Mikey is a sort of Sumo/Chef/Calligraphist. More defensive than offensive. Rather than pizza, they go nuts over riceballs. I'd like to flesh this out more & make a comic of it someday, but who knows. It'd be sorta like Souls Winter meets Usagi Yojimbo.

This could be good, better than the sequels with the new generation of turtles.

It would be better if this wasn't the Roninverse but a standalone story. However, since this is yet another TLR prequel, I have a some guesses:

- The war between the Hamato Clan and the Foot Clan is actually a cyclical fatalism. General Kameyama was the founder of the Hamato Clan, and the enemies he defeated were the founders of the Oroku family and the Foot Clan.

- Because of supernatural fatalism, at some point in the future, there is always have four turtles and one person (whether mutant or human) will inevitably wage war against the descendants of those yokai.

- Michelangelo or Marie is actually the reincarnation of General Kameyama, or at least a reenactment of his fate.

I think you’re definitely on to something here. Look at the new turtles. Look at that long conversation April had with Fugitoid about the ethics of bringing them into the world. Makes you wonder what all was going on between the 1600’s and whenever Splinter and the turtles were mutated.

Interesting stuff!

Where is Cubed to complain about then making more successful and adult oriented TMNT comics instead of a Teeny-Turtles miniseries or something.

So Michelangelo is a kappa, Leonardo is a dinosaur, Raphael is a married Hindu woman. What the heckeroni is Donatello supposed to be?

Whether this new prequel comic can truly unravel some mysteries or only make things more confusing remains to be seen. The worst is that it will be repeat same mistake of IDW canon.

I wish Sakai was drawing this, but I'm definitely intrigued either way.

Since they're Yokai, they will probably show some supernatural power. I wonder if this kappa can also ripping out a magical ball from someone's butts.

Interesting look into folklore about turtles. All I knew of turtles in Japanese folklore was about kappa.
