The accent thing makes me wonder a bit, too. The only thing that would make sense is if Raph hangs out in Brooklyn a lot when he's having Alone Time... and I can see Mikey doing the surfer thing because he thought it was "cool."

But seeing as they learned English from a rat with a Japanese accent, that should be how they learned it.

Other language questions: how did they learn English? My Mask fanfic is dumb, yes, but at least it covered that... The only way Splinter could believeably have a Japanese accent in the first place was if he had the capabilty to learn a language pre-mutation, just not have the capability of actually speaking it. However, he did learn martial arts, so I suppose we just have to accept that he was a Very Special Rat.

Which in turn begs the question: what would have happened to him had Yoshi not died and Splinter had not been mutated? They'd have a cool little act there... like underground ratfights. Put a stray cat in the ring with Splinter and win a fortune when he kicks its butt. Or something.

Sorry. Just thinking out loud (or whatever)...

A cat? Try a pitbull or a jaguar. Splinter was one ferocious little rat.

He roughed the Shredder up pretty good in the first movie, leaving Oroku Saki with a life-long vendetta against a small mammal.

Well...perhaps they watched alot of tv?? They had to have done something other than practice all those years.

Sides....I have a Southern accent....but I grew up in Germany. So anything is possible. Yes I lived in Texas for like 3 years (Ages 5-7) but I grew up mostly in Germany (Ages 1-4, and 7-13). Neither of my parents have a southern accent (heck my dad's from NY). Just me...

there are different areas of a sewer. some carry poo, some are only stormdrains...some are simply an underground river...i would assume they lived away from the toilet tunnels....some of the system junctions even have to be flushed

Turtle wangs are hidden in tail, you wouldnt see any bits anyways. and if they did draw tails..they are male..they would be about as long and big as the tail drawing I did awhile back (see signature hehe)...turtles are ...shall we say, not lacking in the tail.

hehehe funny thread

My 2 cents on the accents is TV. I know alot of mexican kids around here who are first generation immigrants who speak with a similar accent to me and their parents do not speak english. my accent is muttled being from Alabama but learning how to speak properly. Somehow this affects people's ability to nail down where i'm from. (we wont even speak of my attrocious accent when I am speaking Spanish )

and pizza...everyday...they'd be dead of a heart attack around age 30. all that sodium and cheese and we won't even get into any meats on it. Just imaginge how they'd be if they did not work out every day

Plus, Splinter (human or rat - whatever) was raised in Japanese culture, so I presume it'd be more logical of him if he enforced them to eat more Eastern food.

But pizza everyday is still good.... tomatoes prevent certain cancers, I keep on hearing that you need to have cheese at least 3 times a day for dairy intake (seriously), bread is for fiber, they can have veggies on em if they want, ect.... all the basic food groups at one time.

From Wikipedia:
In general, cheese supplies a great deal of calcium, protein, and phosphorus. A 30 gram (one ounce) serving of cheddar cheese contains about seven grams of protein and 200 milligrams of calcium. Nutritionally, cheese is essentially concentrated milk: it takes about 200 grams (seven ounces) of milk to provide that much protein, and 150 grams to equal the calcium.

Some studies claim to show that cheeses including Cheddar, Mozzarella, Swiss and American can help to prevent tooth decay.[22] Several mechanisms for this protection have been proposed:

* The calcium, protein, and phosphorus in cheese may act to protect tooth enamel.
* Cheese increases saliva flow, washing away acids and sugars.
* Cheese may have an antibacterial effect in the mouth.

Ah...the power of cheese!

At least in the current series they don't eat pizza all the time. We've only seen them eat it a couple times... or hear em mention it.

Cool thread!
I always wondered how Mikey spun his nunchakus on his fingers using the chain? (in the 1st movie)
And how does Raph spin his sai when his palm is flat? (in the new toons)

Hmm... Lesse... The first was a simple sight gag, the second I think is actually possible if you initiate the right wrist movement.

It's a proven scientific fact that TMNT is scientifically factual. I'd tell you how, but I don't want to short out your brain.

I find it pretty believable that different people within a household could have different accents. Maybe not as distinctly as in the old toon, but still. And most kids who grow up in the 'States don't usually have an accent after around age 5, even if their parents do, so I don't see why they'd have a Japanese accent. That might usually have something to do with going to school though.

I used to talk much like Raphie when I was young, unlike anyone else in my house. Not so much the Brooklyn sound, but the lil' street thug sound that my friends had. Just like I outgrew it, I could see Raph easily growing into it. Well, I didn't so much outgrow it as have it bullied out of me by my brothers. I could definitely see THAT working the opposite way with Raph too.

I also picked up Valley Girl out of basically nowhere. Just to amuse myself. Natch.

Heh... what if Raph picked up the Brooklyn accent, and Mikey picked up the surf talk to make fun of Raph's new accent?

I don't think they actually live in the area of the sewer that is full of peole sh*t and pee.

Michelangelo somehow gets new comic books every wednesday. I know, he probably goes to the shop "in disguise", which you already mentioned just shouldn't work.
Or he could just order them through a magazine and have them delivered to April's apratment, where he he just picks them up.

neither do other super hero's or other scantly clad male cartoon characters. Look at the Thunder cats like Liono, Panthro, and Tigera. no gentitals!!!

Michelangelo can break just about any structure, including metal, with his nunchakus. It was mostly a problem in the old toon, but he knocked apart a few mousers in the new show with his wooden sticks on a chain.
old toon or New toon both Michaelangelo's know how to weild the nunchuka. And I figure do to his ninja training, he knows how to weild them in just such a way as to delver blows with enough forse to do these type of things.

In the classic toon Michaelangelo is the only turtle that speaks differntly. Raphael doen't have a brooklin accent. And to why he speaks like a suffer, well maybe he just likes to or maybe he just speaks like that because he acts like one and watches suffer movies. Teenagers tend to talk like the people they hang with.

In the new toon, Mikey is dialect free, along with Don and Leo (although I swear Leo has a slight accent sometimes) Raphael probably talks like that because makes him sound tough. And I have a feeling that the boys all speak some japanes dur to Splinter.

Leo has an accent cuz Michael Sinterniklaas (his VA) is Dutch.

You do have a point - just as I could see Mikey adopting a surfer twang (which he has very little of in the new show; it's most apparent in the first few episodes) so he'd sound cool, it's not a stretch of the imagination for Raph to start using a Brooklyn accent because it makes him sound tough. Especially since he seems to like this "tough guy" persona he projects.

Though I have yet to detect an accent in Leo - he says some things a little "funny," but individuals can have quirks like that, even considering that his VA isn't necessarily American. It must be very slight.

I think that TV probably did train them to speak more "American" sounding English, but when they learned it from Splinter, they were probably unaware of the concept of an "accent" and mimicked him until they were exposed to outside English-speakers. And that might be cute... little Japanese-accented kid-Turtles. Or maybe Splinter taught them Japanese first and they learned English later? Either way, it would have been the same way for kids of foreign-born people - it's the other kids at school/other people outside the home that they end up matching accents with. And there's a certain age after which killing an accent is really hard to do. Considering the Turtles' limited exposure to the outside world before they were teenagers, it has to be TV.

Heehee, the time I'm putting into thinking about this (let alone typing it out) is mildly hilarious. I think it's just because it's fun to put brainpower into something a little more enjoyable than schoolwork.

Yeah I know MN, that's why boards like this are fun. Being serious about serious things all the time leads to ulcers.

You're right, Sage, I keep forgetting that Raph doesn't have that kind of an accent in the old toon! Man, it's been too long.

Gobo and Spawn Guy, I can't tell if you're making fun of me, but when you do it that way I don't care. lol
