Could anyone explain to me why Pete is such a tool? Fine, if he doesn't want his foreign fans to read his series, I won't. It seems like it was drawn and written by a ten-year-old, anyway.

Oh dear, I keep forgetting that quite a few people here aren't in the U.S. Maybe he should've launched his own website and put the comics up there for everyone to see, but he gets paid for putting them at wowio, doesn't he? I mean, there's usually advertisements by Verizon & others in front of the books, are they in front of the comics, too (I haven't gone to wowio yet to see for myself)?...

Seeing as how the comics are in black and white I don't see the need to have mentioned them.

Since it's in black and white, sometimes I imagine that they adopted the multicolored bandannas at one point.

I think he put that in there to try to be funny, not to slight the cartoon turtles. After all, the turtles have multi-colored bandannas in the new cartoon and they had them in the movie. If Pete had really wanted, he probably could have had it otherwise.

It was just a joke. I believe it was in one of the letters pages that Pete said he has no problem at all with the multicolored bandannas. I don't know if he prefers the red or not, but he has no problem with the multicolored ones. It was just a joke, and I thought it was funny.

If you ask me, multi-colored bandannas are the joke. But they're not even in the same league as the letters on the belts in terms of insanity/stupidity... but like most, I've come to accept the multi-colored rubbish as a necessary evil in the larger TMNT media.

Multi-colored bandannas are the least of the my problems concerning the larger TMNT media.

Yea...The comics have ads for Verizon. I haven't seen any other types of ads tho. Also when you DL a book they ask that you click on a smiley face, that apperantly tells Verizon to give em more money or something.

TMNT Volume Four issues #1-7 are now available for legal download at www.WOWIO.com!

WOWIO is currently only available for U.S. residents and to sign up for their free downloading service (limited to three books per day) you'll need a private e-mail address (i.e. you can't use major providers such as Google, Yahoo, G-Mail, etc.), a scan of a personal I.D. or a valid credit card. See their site for more details.

We're looking into international options to provide the books for free download to everyone outside of the U.S., but due to the complexities of international copyright law, we may not have much success on that end. If all else fails, we'll post low res JPGs of the issues on our site like the issues from Volume One (currently linked at the bottom of the Comics page).

The plan is to post issues #8-14 in February, issues #15-21 in March and issues #22-28 in April. In May, all-new issues will begin with TMNT #29, and from there, a new book will be posted as often as Peter, Jim and Eric can complete them!
May?! ARGH!!!!

I had never even heard of Wowio until now. I really like the idea of downloading high quality scans of comics for FREE!!! Criticisms not withstanding, I'm really looking forward to seeing more issues on this site.

Ok, this is lame. Murphy said the art for the first two issues was complete. If that's the case, and we're not going to see them until May anyways, they might as well just sell/solicit through Diamond!

But I think Diamond has a set of fees and minimum orders/print runs, things of this nature (though granted I know little about the specific logistics of any of this, but I know enough to know that it's not as simple as you suggest) that all, still, leave Laird with a book that loses money. I think the general idea is to put the book online, then do a very small print run that just the niche fans will buy... then he only gets pure profit and little, if any, unsold books. In theory.

Not saying I agree with it, but it kind of makes sense to me from a standpoint of, "OK, TMNT Volume 4 doesn't make money, the way it's going it's never going to make money, and I'm not going to try and change the way I do the book so as to have it make money" while still doing the same book he enjoys/enjoyed putting out in Vol. 4 but now in such a way that it won't actually cost him money at the end of the day.

But at any rate, color me completely disinterested in these online TMNT comics. I'll check out the new Vol. 4 issues when they start coming out online, then order the print ones from Mirage or whatever and that's the end of it.

Oh, I have no doubt it's about money. But Peter's statement/announcement about the online comics only said he didn't like Diamond's deadlines OR the huge amount of time between finishing the comic and seeing the finished book in a store, which Diamond's deadlines require. Waiting five months for a virtually complete comic book does nothing to beat either of those complaints. It'd just be nice if he could be frank and honest.

Mind you, I have absolutely no issues with the comics not being in stores, as their presence embarrasses me as a fan.

I thought the multi-colored bandannas looked all right in the live action movie. It makes it hard for people to ID the turtles otherwise unless they have their weapons on them constantly. In the black and white comic it doesn't matter one way or the other, but when you get to the larger TMNT media, it kind of makes sense to try to differentiate the turtles, especially marketing wise. It gives the parents more justification to buy all four of the turtles for the kids, instead of going "wait, they all look the same anyway".

Strictly marketing-wise. There's simply no good reason for the Turtles to go about making fashion statements to each other with brightly, different colored bandannas... they're a ninja clan -- albeit, a small one, but one nonetheless. Also, my old Feudal Japan history might be a little muddy, but I'm fairly certain ninja clans weren't worried about differentiating themselves from one another... in fact, this would be robbing themselves of a vital bit of possible misdirection in battle, which is the name of the game. Four ninja that look alike, all wearing red bandannas blending in and out of the dark trying to kill you... yeah, you wouldn't know what the **** is going on, and that's the idea.

But I don't dwell on it too much in the spinoff universes -- only in the original, Mirage source material were they ever actually portrayed as real ninja... raised, trained, and conditioned for the sole purpose of assassinating Oroku Saki. The spinoff universes, their "ninja" training is just window dressing, so who cares what bandanna color they have.

Just read number 7.

What is the purpose of the Superhero Turtles? And why would they turn Splinter into Slither in the cartoon version?

They left us in a MAJOR cliffhanger at the end. Won't spoil it, other than for now most people would think the true explanation would be something much simpler that happens in real life often.

I have no idea why they threw the Superhero Turtles in there.

Yeah, that was quite a cliffhanger. But in the mean time I'm going to do a search and see what kind of other comics they have on this thing.

Well, I finally got around to creating a Wowio account and getting the v.4 comics. I already have the print copies of them, but it's nice to have them in digital form as well. I just have to say that I am quite impressed with the scan quality on these things. Granted, I've only skimmed through a couple issues, but everything looked crystal clear and in perfect condition. The pages look like they were actually completely flat when scanned which is not as easy to do as you might think. I only bring this up because I bought the ~500 issue Amazing Spider-man dvd that has every issue in pdf format, but the quality of some of those comics is rather poor. And sometimes the scans aren't flat, so the pages look slightly arched. Not so with these Wowio v.4 comics. I just had to share that with everyone.

So... with that said, does anyone have any recommendations on good comics or books to download from Wowio? I've added ARBBH to my queue, but I haven't heard of most of the other comics on Wowio. I'm just curious if there are any true gems to be found, and they don't have to be just comics. Anything you find on Wowio that is really good is fair game. All I ask is that if you recommend a series, please tell us something about it as I'd rather not waste time on a series I know I wouldn't like since Wowio only lets us download 3 items a day. Thanks, dudes!

EDIT:

I think the only reason they were thrown in there was because someone at Mirage (Peter? Kevin?) had come up with superhero turtle designs years back and Peter wanted to use them for something. All in all, I thought it was a fun tangent.

There's some old horror comics from the fifties on there. Those can be kind of interesting.
