If liscensing was a prob, they could have just used the characters they already had the right to when they did Turtles in Time. I mean, I'd rather habe hatless Leatherhead than no Leatherhead. I mean, replace Utrominator with Metalhead, replace the 3 Rabbids with Tokka, Rahzar and Leatherhead and we got a deal. I know millions would still bitch that we got Tokka & Rahzar instead of Bebop and Rocksteady, but if Ubisoft can't afford to use them or whatever, at least we got somethings from the OT and the older movies to really call it '25 years in the making'.

Guess I found out a few days later. WTF is up with the costumes though? I know Rocker Raph and HipHop Mike are from that deleted music line, but what's with Leo's Samurai-ish outfit, and what the hell is Don supposed to be?

That was never the music series Mike. Mike was supposed to be more Reggae/Rocksteady (music, not rhino) type, but all it was was a stupid hat and hair. Actually "Hip-Hop Mikey" looks like they kind of modified Don's "DJ D" from that line for him.

Leo... I'm not certain. That's not a samurai, that's for damn sure. It's like a cross between his Neko Ninja disguise and his unused Shinobi World outfit from Back to the Sewer/Superworld whatever.

Don is based on Playmates' version of his Cyber Turtle look.

Wow! I only liked Don's Alt. Kinda wished they'd made the Samurai Leo from the Old Toys, but they were using only recent stuff. ('Drome Level does not count.)

Interesting how Playmates went with such a simple design considering how almost overly-detailed their Cyber look was in Back to the Sewers.

Well, like the Music Turtles, the Cyber Turtles were canceled. So thankfully, we don't have to see such hideous representation in figure form. Really, though, that's one of the reasons Playmates has made me sad as of late; they make figures that look like crap, and they cancel way too many lines.

I've yet to play the game, but there seems to be a lot of question in this forum as to just how much influence fan service has on how good a game is. I will admit, I'm a sucker for fan service, but all the fan service in the world can't make a bad game good. Enjoyable game play should be the first priority of any good game.

That said, fan service is not without its place. A video game is, in many ways, like a story or a movie that's in the hands of the player. And many of the things that come with fan service - such as likable characters, in-jokes, and connections to things we're familiar with - make stories fun.

I also think that the people who wanted more fan-service are justified in wanting what was promised. The game WAS hyped as being "25 years in the making", and was directed at old fans just as much - if not more so - than new ones, or so we inferred. The logo resembling the 80's Turtles logo, the presence of "Krang" and the Technodrome... clearly, they wanted to appeal to their older fans. The fact is this: the makers of the game promised - or, at the very least, strongly implied - major nostalgia and came up short. If the promotion of this game hadn't been aimed at hardcore turtle fans, odds are we'd be a lot less disappointed by the lack of fan service.

One last thing: a larger roster not only would have fulfilled our need for fan-service, but would have likely extended the replayability of the game. Smash Bros. Brawl, for example, features a massive roster, giving everyone the chance to play the game over and over without making the player feel that he/she is having the exact same experience every time. The player can experiment playing the same level or game mode with different characters, and deal with different challenges each time. This could have greatly helped Smash-Up a lot.

As I've said, I've yet to play the game, so I can't make any final judgments on the game's quality yet; I merely wanted to discuss the role that I felt fan service plays in this game and in video games in general.

My opinion? Absolutely, yes. Even with all its faults, it's the best TMNT game in well over a decade.

They missed some obvious opportunities, but the gameplay is still quite good. So I think it is worth buying.
