So, ya, I just want to chime in that this word is indeed pretty offensive (at least to me and other Japanese-Americans that I know). I've been called it many times (though not as often as "gook") and am not too keen on the word. The rat thing, though, I can honestly say I've never heard of. I'm not debunking this rat thing, I'm just saying that I'm completely unfamiliar with it.

I have to say I'm worried about this direction.
I am another who cannot stand the OT anymore. I have a best friend, a few years older than me, who can't either except for its nostalgia factor. We both used to enjoy it as kids, but now that we're 26 and 29 respectively, it doesn't have the same appeal to us as it once did when were 6 years old or 9 years old. We're not "bending to the flock" as you put, Zarius. We've grown up and our tastes have simply changed. It's a natural thing to happen, every day in fact, from even food to clothes, if you want to get technical. There was no real plot to the series and the fighting was lame. The Turtles themselves were like clones of each other they acted so alike and two dimensional personalities. The villians were whiny and unthreatening. Shredder had to be gay for as girly as he acted most of the time. The Foot Soldiers were nothing more than mindless robots... Need I say more? It's something I ate up as a little girl like no tomorrow, but now it's something I can't see without groaning and beating my head on the nearest wall. Once in a while maybe I'll laugh, especially with the Turtles Forever clip I saw earlier this week, but mostly it's just head-beating. I love the 2k3 series, first four seasons, for it's seriousness appeal and it's actual threatening, mostly human, villians. The real bad-ass fights from the Turtles that me, a girl, would get giddy over. There was plenty of humor in there, it wasn't hard to look for, but it wasn't so over-the-top slapstick you wanted to put your head in a bear trap. People can diss me all they like for this, but I'm not looking for a fight. I'm only stating my opinion and some of us I think around here do tend to forget that. It's okay to have differing thoughts, that's what makes us all unique to have different things to like, but do we honestly have to rip a new one into each other because of it when we don't agree? I don't think so. You can have a good debate without having to feud like wild animals. It's a little thing called 'respect'.

That's exactly why I'm repeatedly emphasizing "Season 1, Season 1, Season effing 1!!!" when I talk about how I have hopes for Nick's new stuff not being utter crap. If someone can't see intelligent humor, real threats, actual fighting, and a plotline to Season 1 then we need to sit down and watch it together so it can be explained to you.

Indeed. Rocksteady and Bebop actually gave the Turtles a run for their money during the first season. While the first season was still a far cry from the comics, it still seemed to have a much higher level of seriousness and danger that the rest of the series (save for the polar-opposite Red Sky episodes) lacked. It's only starting from the second season that the "pizza in the face" attack became the norm.

The whole reason I got into Turtles is because classic Season 1 reminded me of Thundercats. Season 2? Not so much. Season three? Forget it. So, I agree that this would be a good thing if modeled solely after Season 1... but it would only be a matter of time before elements of the lamer eps sneak their way in.

That is a big one for me: if Bebop and Rocksteady are in it, make them a threat. Make me go "uh-oh" when they show up like they did in Season 1 or when the Turtles had to fight Hun early on in 2k3. They can be as dumb as a box of rocks for all I care as long as they're super strong and have a decent armory to throw at the Turtles.
Heck, if I were Nick and using the OT as my source of inspiration, I'd use Bebop and Rocksteady as a measuring stick to say, "These two gave you this much trouble. Well, the Stone Warriors we're gonna bring over number in the thousands and each one is at least twice as strong as those two mutants," and use it as part of an overall plotline for a season. If my worst fears come true, though, and this ends up being all comedy and no real action, I'd like to hope the comedy was at least half as funny as the TMNT Manga. |

The original cartoon had great chemistry. The Turtles functioned well together, April and the Channel 6 news crew were hilarious, and Shredder/Krang/Bebop/Rocksteady also had great interactions. All 3 major "groups" of the show had great character interaction and chemistry, and it was fun to them mix it all up with each other. Yes, there are some aspects of the old toon that I wish were handled better, but the show is still damn entertaining and I'm almost as old as you are. |

Whenever or not you find the series entertaining is irrelevant, the reasons for your opinion are what he's refering to, and he'd be right, to say the Turtles were all "the same" and two-dimensional is inane logic that flies in the face of the actual series. Quote:

You're simply wrong. Calling the characters from the OT "clones" of each other is just you showing ignorance, and ignoring facts. Just because you call it an opinion doesn't make it right. |

My GOD, do you LISTEN to yourself? "Grown up"? Here you are posting on a forum about four sewer-dwelling fictious amphibian ninjas, you have, for your avatar and sig, screencaps from A FRICKIN' CARTOON, ignorantly thrashing another FRICKIN' CARTOON, just to "big up" the FRICKIN' CARTOON you are biased the most towards, so much that you PRETEND that there's no difference. Quote:
You CHOSE to suddenly think being an "adult" (and you have no idea what that term means, let's just make that clear), meant you shouldnt be obligated to watch a fun, quirky animated series and instead chose to watch a...fun, quirky animated series that you enjoy...now... ...Hmm...logic's missing something here...what is it? Pal, you havent grown up. Do NOT kid yourself on this. Foot Soldiers were robots? Who cares? It's not like any of them had a character in the modern series either. What's the difference? None. With the former, they could get away with decapitation and splicing where it mattered (oh look, something similar happened in season one of the modern series...NO DIFFERENCE AGAIN! WOW!) Shredder being campy? Again, big deal, it was a blend of irony, Avery was a superb V.A, his lines were gold, and he could handle his own if there were some serious elements. No plot? The comics never had one either, the plot at best would stop and start at Kevin and Peter's leisure. And the modern series HAD a plot, and closed it far too soon...season two I beleive (Secret Origins), leaving the rest of the season to UTTERLY LIMP. Villains were unthreatning? First of all, it wasnt thier job to be threatning, they were there to crack a joke and present a practical problem to be solved with teamwork, the usual morality play-of-the-week, with humour. Take a look at your own laundry list, especially in a series that had to have some weight. Hun being a wallflower, Baxter being defeated fifty five thousand times and losing every inch of his body, Garbageman being...well...garbage. Cyber-Shredder? Darius? The Dark Turtles? Need I go on? The modern series didnt have a leg to stand on by the end because it made everyone a joke far too early. Tastes don't change, this is evident by what you are watching, how you react to it, and the willfull pretense that the modern series was above and beyond it's more succesful predecessor when there largely on the same level...at best, it just got a little further than Red Sky before it tripped up and bowed to the master by embaracing it's goofyness.

They simply mean that calling the original toon Turtles "clones of each other" is flat out wrong.
Everyone who watched the original series knows the Turtles all have distinct and memorable personalities. I am actually astounded one could say they were "clones of each other." The hell? |
