I agree it's kinda cliche, but it sells toys...and you know that's probably the bigest reason.

I've been thinking about this and I actually want badly an updated collectors version of the OT toyline, not necessarily an OT collectors toyline. I'll still be all over them but I hope we get the best of both worlds and not just OT.

I have no doubt that even if Playmates finally "upped their game", that if NECA had been allowed to distribute and sell who they wanted to, that NECA would've grossly stomped anything Playmates could put out. We all saw how badly their "Mirage-inspired figures" looked, especially compared to NECA.
It was only a joke not meant to be taken seriously. As far as NECA they knew from the beginning about Playmates and they still got the license, crying like a baby after the fact that Playmates won't let them is stupid. Also unless your name is Harry Potter good luck having more than 2 waves if you're a NECA license. And while NECA has made some cool stuff they've made just as much terrible stuff with god awful paintjobs, subpar articulation and bad sculpts. I have never liked NECA, especially since they always acquire cool licenses to make (or not make) crap from it. TMNT is one of the few exceptions and even then its only really one sculpt they sold to fans as four figures and cancelled the second wave.

About the old toon line, after they obviously do the first wave of the usuals, (everyone from the first season, I imagine), will we get toys based on characters we never got?

A long overdue Lord Dregg figure, perhaps? A mutating Carter?

As with everything in corporate america, I am sure the answer to that question is based 100% on sales.

I imagine the old toon line may sell better than the line based on the Nick show. Didn't the '88 figures they released for the 25th anniversary all sell well?

I know they're probably going to remake all the '88 figures first before they move on to anyone else. I'd just rather not see the likes of a new, "Ace Duck," and instead see other old toon characters we never got like Lord Dregg or Tempestra, etc.

While I'm right in the front of the line for wanting toys of lord dregg and tempestra they really need to be smart with this line so it can last a long time.
I'd say each wave should have the 4 turtles for awhile, with 4 other supporting characters.
Then maybe the second year release the 4 turtles again but from a differnt universe say image? and then release some more characters with those as the year goes on.

Doesn't other companies poll the fandom with a list of characters to see what figures they want to see produced? If so, Playmates should let us all decide who should get produced.

I do like the idea of different Turtle incarnations (not variants).

@VaughnMichael - Since apparently the NDA doesn't matter much according to Nick (see the pizza boxes thread), can we see some images?

They were not allowed to photograph anything.

Ah, okay. For some reason I thought I remembered him saying he couldn't wait to show us pictures or some such, which I took to mean that he took them. Probably just remembered something wrong though.

Dregg might be possible, but I wouldn't count on either of those, especially Carter.

Playmates wants to make old toon characters because they are popular. Not just with the TMNT fan base, but with the overall toy buying public. Most adult collectors (which is an ever recognized growing market) want characters from the original toon but only those first few seasons. A huge portion of people don't even know there was a Lord Dregg. Old Playmates characters that had toys and core cartoon characters like Rocksteady & Bebop are what Playmates is hoping to make, because they know that fans of all ages will eat them up.

I wouldn't get too caught up in hopes for obscure characters or characters from later seasons that most the general public doesn't remember.

This is why you include either a comic book about the character or a mini dvd that has an episode the character is in to sell the thing.

Besides it would give them incentive to release seasons 9 and 10 on DVD when they see a Lord Dregg figure.
