Not sure what I dislike...I know chalk up another negative reaction...maybe it's the fact he's so barrel chested, maybe it's the "missing" arm....I dunna...just not my cup of tea.

EDIT: It's the non-neck! That's what seems "off" to me.

It's possible we're all going to be in for some future disappointment, since the artist's description suggests he submitted a revised piece for the official IDW cover that is yet to be revealed:
Quote:
nickelodeon wanted changes so this one is unpublished… will show the real one once IDW shows it…
*fingers crossed that its only one of the many variants*

I am sorry I like it. I love the way the plasteron looks. To each his own. 1 nitpick seems the upper part of his chest looks 2 big.

I'll never understand why people with little talent get picked up to do covers no problem whereas someone like me that actually has it where it counts gets kicked to the curb or has e-mails that go unanswered. I'm not trying to toot my own horn but damn, it's pretty insulting and discouraging when all I want to do is one official piece.

Well we all know sometimes it's about who you know, other times it's about how much ass you kiss.

Most of the alternate covers have nothing to do with the source material anyway. We see the Turtles done in original cartoon style and a whole bunch of other weird stuff.

It's waaaaaaaay worse. The Kieth cover has style and is drawn well, even if you don't personally find it appealing.

Maybe ya'll can help me out. I have vague artistic artistic ability, but as an amateur, I can't really point out much that's artistically flawed with this piece other than the fact that the style doesn't appeal to me and would be a terrible choice to showcase on a mass marketed comic cover. Rose and Jester are the only ones I remember who offered specific critiques:

*too dark in parts[does that mean the lighting is wrong?]
*shell goes up all the way to the tip of the head on the left arm side but apparently can't be seen clearly on the right arm side [I think I can actually see it though]
*no belt [matter of preference, IMO, unless the belt is physically necessary to support the sword straps]
*missing right arm [I'm still going back on forth on how much of the arm one should see from that angle]
*short neck [perhaps a matter of preference]

For my own educational benefit, can people point out what's wrong with this piece artistically? I know the artist is a lot better than I am, so it would help me to learn why this piece is so terrible.

I hear ya Adam. I'm by no means a great artist, I could never draw something of that caliber, however something just seems off...

I agree it seems "off," but the reasoning seems to be more of stylistic preference than artistic objectivity.

that's true too. To me it's the short/non existent neck, the very "puffed up" plastron, and the perspective regarding the right arm.

Well in an artistic sense... the color palette is so small, and everything is dark, muddy even. The shoulders on him are MASSIVE. Now, some of the detailing on the plastron is nice... but then the background is kind of a last-minute "Just throw something in" with the Tim Burton tendrils and the geometric symbols and writing... the facial structure just looks like a man with no nose and chubby cheeks and a bum chin. I do agree that the right arm placement is kind of odd. The length of the arms themselves... he could scratch his knees without leaning over.

You have no idea what the story is about. While I understand that some IDW covers don't usually fit the stories, this... I wouldn't want to pick it up.

Ah, a substantive critique at last. Glorious!

It's interesting as a piece of fanart, but I agree with pretty much this entire thread when I say I'm glad it will not be placed on an actually published Turtles item.

Especially if it was for the Leo comic... I would have been annoyed if the other guys had beautiful variant covers and Leo got this...
