They change their bandanas so others can tell them apart?

If and when IDW decides to switch to color Bandanas I will still be on board, and when they decided to switch back I will be onboard.

Why would they care about doing that? And their skin tones are pretty different now anyway.

And then there's the different weapons. And body types.

Aliens may see them as we see ants, so in order to differentiate. Its a possible as with every other theory.

So I'll ask again... why would the Turtles care about that?

Rather than getting unnecessarily wound up or jumping to ridiculous conclusions over the whole thing why not just wait and see how it plays out. People are getting rabidly possessive over this whole issue and are going to look a little silly when it all falls together. I'm pretty blase on the colour issue. It doesn't bother me. The only time I've EVER heard of ninja clans having any sort of uniform code was the Koga and Iga clans, and that was only because they were militarized. These Turtles AREN'T a clan. They're a family. The original ones could MAYBE have been considered a clan up until they killed the Shredder, beyond that there's not an ounce of evidence of them acting as a clan. Real ninjas were mercenaries, who -- generally -- killed people on someone's dollar/order or acted as spies. They dressed like civilians most of the time so as not to be caught out as what they were, so if anything, the most realistic presentation of the Turtles being ninjas has been 1) When they killed the Shredder under Splinter's orders, and 2) when they dress up like bums and hit the streets. And to be honest, they haven't done that as many times in the comics when fighting the Foot Clan as they have in the old cartoon show.

The Foot Clan -- as a uniformed clan -- works. They're a traditionalist militarized group, and have been across EVERY iteration of the Turtles since Mirage. The Turtles themselves are very far from this. The turtles, as far as I have ever been able to see, are a family unit that have grown up training and fighting a particular way, making them skilled in those arts, but far from a clan. As I said, even in the Mirage days, once the Shredder was killed, so was any notion of them being a clan. They're a family more than anything else, and in my mind, this is more prevalent in the IDW stories than in any other.

Whew! That's my two cents. Take it or leave it, but that was also my thought process when writing at Mirage and nobody ever had any problem with it. Without giving away any details of what I'm doing, there's an extremely good reason for the Turtles changing their colours, one I'm VERY happy with, and one that, in my mind at least, makes total sense in terms of story and character development (and I'm pretty sure Bobby will agree with me). I think/hope a lot of the die hard Mirage fans will be pleased with the brutality that accompanies the change, too.

At the end of the day, I think it's best you all just stop freaking out about something that hasn't happened yet and just see how it happens before you decide to get all up in arms. If you're not happy after that, that's your deal, but there's zero point in getting stabby about it all until it hits. Speculate away, just don't get so wound up about it.

Also, this is the Infestation thread, so let's try and keep it that way. If you want to debate colours vs no, maybe start another thread...?

One thing I don't understand, do the Turtles ONLY wear the colored bandanas in the Infestation issues?

Or will we be seeing them wear them from like IDW #6 onward of the regular series? Or do they go back to all-red, or alternate?

I don't get it.

Because this is a message board and that's kinda what goes on when only a few clues and threads to go on are to be had. In fact, that's true of pretty much any comic book message board... the topics devoted to things like "OMG, wtf is going on, what do you guyz think is gonna happen in issue #123" probably far outweigh the topics actually devoted to actual issues that are already in the rearview.

"Rabidly possessive" is a very strange and derogatory way to describe advocates of the source material's bandannas.

Quote:

But then you're the guy getting paid to write comics with Turtles wearing the rainbow bandannas... and I don't recall you jumping in on any bandanna color debates before the IDW TMNT thing came about.

Just sayin'.

"Clan Hamato" has been mentioned many times. They're a clan. It's canon. You know this.

Except for actual in-story references to them being "Clan Hamato" as recently as in issues of Tales of the TMNT V2.

Would they still actively be a Clan in, say, Volume 4? Eh, probably not. Now does that mean by default that Mikey puts on an orange bandanna and Donatello goes for the purple? No, probably not. If anything, there'd be a good case for people to ask, "Eh, why are they wearing bandannas at all at this point?"

There is little need to blend into human society on the day-to-day... when the Turtles are not a part of human society. They live in the sewers, remote farms, stuff like that, remember?

Yup.

I don't think that's right at all. The source material TMNT, from the time they were able to stand upright, were trained and conditioned by Splinter for the sole purpose of killing Oroku Saki. That this goal was not made evident to them until it was time to do the killin' is beside the point -- they were raised and trained as a unit, as a clan for this unified goal.

They weren't able to slay fully trained Foot ninjas by the truckload at the tender age of 15 by spending all their time doing each others' makeup or standing in front of the mirror, wondering which color best brings out their eyes/personality -- they were huddled in the sewers away from our world, training, sweating, and busting their asses to better their Clan.

No matter what happened when the Shredder was killed, all of that lifetime, all of that upbringing and conditioning Splinter subjected them to doesn't just go away... it's still there, still a defining part of them.

Quote:
As I said, even in the Mirage days, once the Shredder was killed, so was any notion of them being a clan.
Functionally, maybe, though you might have a better case for that with "City at War," which is when they actually hit the pause button, said "hold up," looked back in retrospect, and made their peace with Splinter's mission for them. "I would die for Splinter but I don't know if I can give my life to him," and all that, etc..

And by that point, we're so far into the Mirage TMNT that it would be pretty weird if they just suddenly went, "Oh hey, guys, post-ninja clan celebration time... who wants the rainbow bandannas???" Cue the kazoo, y'know?

Quote:

Well of course, the IDW universe can make the Turtles however they want. In fact, unlike the in source material, the Turtles may not even be a ninja clan at all in the IDW universe... in which case, hey, rainbow bandannas may be less of a big deal.

But no less asinine.

And for you as the writer with an obvious invested interest in this thread's namesake, telling your readership to "stop freaking out" before they buy your book... might not be the best policy.

I definitely don't feel as strongly toward the bandana color as others, though I can understand the passion of those who feel firmly one way or the other.

Personally, the idea of an actual story point regarding the Turtles actively transitioning from all-red to individual colors has me intrigued, and as long as it isn't as insipid as the TMNT Adventures story that did the exact same thing, I'll at least give it a chance.

What, Spengs, you weren't sold on the idea of the turtles wearing multi-colored baseball caps?

As a concept, I give the TMNTA guest writers credit for at least referencing the Mirage tradition in a medium based on the Fred Wolf series. For most turtles fans like myself, that was probably only the 2nd clue we ever received that the original TMNT wore red (the first being the box art to the first NES game). In terms of execution, however, it just comes across as one of the most bizarre examples of "filler." It's like it was originally planned to be a story in one of the seasonal Specials, but just got forced into the main series to buy Steve Murphy and Chris Allan another month to prepare the "Blind Sight" arc.

As someone HATING the colored bandanas, i can never accept or be happy about them with rainbow bandanas. There might be some logical reasons and the reasons that causing them to change towards that childish look might be satisfying.
But at the end of the day the important thing is them starting to wear the colored ones and staying that way ( if it happens ).
the event thay causing them do that will be forgotten in the long run and all we have will be 4 unnecessary colors.
I would not be feeling that way if they would change their bandana colors , but not in the old toon way.
give them white, grey, turquoise or any other color unrelated, silly or comes to the mind least.
But whatever the logical reason might be to change the colors, it is bright as day that , changing them to "old toon colors" is for being able to milk the old toon and trying to attract the attention of the ppl who do not know or do not care about the main comic series of Mirage.

If the origin is different...
If the IDW-verse seems like a Ultimate Marvel universe of Mirage, or something like that ( cause it seemd that way so far to me ) ,
I do not understand why they are still putting on those old toon bandanas instead of brand new colored ones. ( other than the reason i wrote at the upper paragraph )

If the colored bandanas shall only be at Infestation, and will not be present at main series, i am ready to eat up my words btw.
Cause i still believe that this colored bandana thing was born cause of lack of cooperation between the IDW main series team and IDW Infestation team. ( i mean the main infestation book, not Tristan's )

For me it is not the colored bandanas, it is using the bandana colors of the old tv show.

The whole idea, I thought, was to make the IDW TMNT series into an Ultimate universe... of all universes TMNT. Meaning -- I thought -- taking the "good" and "best" of each universe and making like a jumbalaya out of it from which something new and fresh arises. In theory.

This is why the rainbow bandannas are so puzzling to me (or at least, it's one reason) in the IDW TMNT... if it's an Ultimates-esque universe, you guys are supposed to be cherry-picking and using the good things from the various TMNT universes, not the bad.

I believe what we discuss is morely about the "change" of bandanas. Not them being multicolored and rainbow patterned.
It may seem like we who oppose them might not be liking them colors (at least for myself and i can proudly say that i hate colored bandanas )
But as i said, this is more about that radical change itself, not the color of bandanas.
If the bandanas were colored since issue 1 at IDW main series, some ppl would not care; some ppl would be happy, and some ppl would not like this.
But at the end, everybody would be accepting it.
The thing is...making them Mirage friendly first, then embracing the old toon bandanas seems weird to me.
If that bandana change is indeed crucial or cause of a life changing thing in turtles' life, I really really am curious about what this is. ( Tho my opinion about using the old toon colors being for the purpose of getting advantage of the old toon crowd will not change as i said )

Tho i do not like them, funny bandanas are not related with the level of violence or the matrity level of the book of course.
Does not Simon Bisley draw some TMNT characters with color bandanas but in his most grotesque style?
The turtles would be ripping Old Hob's gang members' throats with their trade mark IDW teeth and they would still be wearing the rainbow bandanas.

So for me , more important than the color of bandanas, it is that change all of a sudden that seems weird at this point. And quickly embracing the good, sweet and friendly old toon colors instead of creating new ones.

I am sure that , ppl would not be arguing this much if the colors used were not the old toon colors as i said. Make them some colors never used. Build the logic around those brand new, fresh colors.
and i believe since IDW-verse is the new TMNT universe and most ppl are open to surprises at the moment, people would be more curious, not angry or sad about that color change.
At least i know that i would feel that way.
