There is a "Phantom of the Opera" quality to the Turtles, stemming from the outsiders/outcasts/freaks thing. You know, always living beneath a city and population that can and will never embrace them and, at poignant moments, them (or at least the audience) kind of being made soberingly aware of that. That should never be like the driving focus of any Turtle movie or iteration (at its core, we want to see four ninja brothers kicking ass and, sure, occasionally joking around), but it absolutely shouldn't be shied away from either.

How about the fact that you have 4 brothers who are true outsiders...they will never know the joy of, say, falling in love...or having a kid...or having the 'white picket fence life'....having a family of any kind, or a future for their species...anytime they would try to show their face, they'd be called a freak, or a monster, and get someone to capture and dissect them.

Even heroes like Iron Man, Batman, Spider-Man, and X-Men...they still are, or at least LOOK, human (again, for the most part, I know there's a few X-Men who don't)...so they can still go out, get girlfriends, go to the mall, etc. without worrying about being caught, killed, and more.

Even if one of them for some reason did fall in love with a human, it'd never work out and it'd be a tragic story from the start. And of top of that, even their ostracized life is Further problematic with the various new enemies they gain, or when they get hurt they can't just 'go to the hospital', or even the simple fact that they got to live in disease-infested sewers for most of their lives...

So they can be deep...
You can make a goddamn cupcake deep if you stretch as much as you did and put in elements that are only brought up by overthinking fans.

Turtles longing to fall in love and not being able to. Who the hell carrrreeesss. Fanfiction writers.

I don't mind a bit of depth here and there, but too much will run the risk of turning TMNT into something it was never intended to be in the first place.

How is Channing Tatum connected with TMNT? Did I miss something?

Oh, TMNT in the mass media crossed that bridge a long, long time ago.

That was a knock against Paramount also postponing GI Joe 2, for 3D conversion and for adding more of Channing Tatum (they killed him off at the beginning, but now they're reshooting some stuff so he's in it more).

He's not, it's referring to GI Joe 2, were a rumor is they pushed back the film to add more Channing Tatum scenes.

How is anybody going to say Avengers wasn't deep? The characters struggled through real adversary and near-death to reach their goals, conquering issues within themselves while saving humanity.

That's deep.

Turtles can have the same deepness. Period. It's the challenged fans that spew when they hear that new TMNT stuff will be OT based because "that's what made the Turtles popular"...please. Give it up.

It wasn't deep. There was no deep study on the inner workings of character's minds or any intelligent commentary on any kind of real issue. By your standards EVERY movie is deep.

Avengers didn't need to be anything more than it was. It was a very entertaining super hero movie. It's ok to accept things for what they are.

I love Professional Wrestling. I know it's f*cking dumb and always will be. No matter how 'good' someone does it. I'm not going around acting like it's some brilliantly written piece of literature with rich characters. I don't need to validate my fandom by pretending its something it isn't.

C'mon son. It's Ninja Turtles. I love it but let's not oversell it.

Hahahaha, oh man. Your definition of deep is a bit skewed.

I take my hat off. I really agree that everything must be judged as what it really is and not according to our personal dream ideals. I also enjoy WWE sometimes and I go to yoyo competitions, but I don't see myself as the next Tony Hawk of yoyoing. And Tony Hawk only has a skateboard, nothing more.

I'd like to see a Ninja Turtles movie "a la" Batman Dark Knight, not negating the comic fictional root of them but puting them on a less comedian and more contempory frame. But it would still be and action film adaptation of some cool comic characters.

Maybe by "deep" I tend to think nuanced. The first movie by Barron has lots of little details and nuances that make it more than the some of it's parts...if you take the time to look at it.

And as for the Turtles questioning their own mortality and how they can never have a normal life, that's not fan fiction, that's this.

I bet they put it on hold because of that short clip that michael bay released about the turtles being aliens. everyone freaked out because of that one word. "Alien". I think what he meant though is that the Ooze that the turtles got mutated from is from an alien race.

Well I guess if they are bothering to try to improve it by pushing the movie back I can deal with it. Hopefully it ends up being better for it. I was worried it was cancelled.

At this point I could care less when the new movie comes out. As long as there's any iteration of the TMNT, be it a comic book, cartoon series or even a Broadway play I'll be happy!

...

I ...

Hmm ...

We have had deep Turtles fiction before. But its numbers include "City at War" and a handful of Mirage's more reflective or indie-styled pieces, and that's about it. No one should hold out for anything like that. The most we can reasonably hope for is a competently done action movie, which the 2007 film wasn't, and which many, many franchise-based initiatives within the last few years have failed to be as well. Not sure if holding the script back bodes well or not for moving in a positive direction.
