By every single account, WB knew that Green Lantern was going to be a spectacular failure months before it was released (and I actually don't hate that movie). They still went all-in on in it, with a Super Bowl spot, lots of toys, etc. etc. Because hope. Even if a studio makes a movie that they know is likely going to be bad, it's their job to push it, cross-market it, and eventually, make back twice the money they spent on it, even if it takes twenty years to do so.

And again, before anyone jumps in accusing me of saying things I'm not saying: All I mean is, the studio would pimp the movie even IF it sucks, because it's their job. It doesn't mean the movie IS bad. It means that even if it causes Super-Ass-Cancer in everyone who watches it, the studio will stand behind it. Saying "If they thought it was bad they wouldn't have this and that for it" just isn't true.
I've used the same reasoning several times, but to debunk this idea that the movie is being poorly promoted because the studio is afraid or ashamed.

And, again. They didn't have to put the two humvee takedowns in the promos. They didn't have to give us a close-up, unmasked view of Mikey's face. They didn't have to allude to an altered origin. And they certainly didn't have to unveil the Shredderzord. I honestly feel like these promotions have been purposely and boldly, in-your-face, like "DEAL WITH IT," from the get-go. And I don't see how anyone could look at those commercials and trailers and think that these guys are afraid of backlash.

I can't hate what I really haven't seen yet. The trailer and tv spot that I have seen doesn't really show me much and until I see the upcoming trailer or a trailer that doesn't show me the same **** over and over again then its an F for the Marketing Team.

The Marketing sucks from their use of paint swatches, internet memes and fan art photoshops has been abysmal.

And now, when it does flop, the blame won't be because the movie may be bad, or that people just weren't digging the revamped look of the Turtles, or the story being so very different from past incarnations, but the blame will be on the marketing.

Some of my thoughts exactly... Too many of those involved at the core of it don't appear to be from the generation that gives a damn about it. The director is potentially on the older edge of the original TMNT generation, but apparently he's originally from South Africa and didn't step foot on U.S. soil until 1996 (at age 20?) so I have doubts about how much he might have even been exposed to it as a kid, if at all. (When did TMNT get to South Africa?)

If this whole thing had been in the hands of really only those who "get it" and know where the lines are on making changes it would probably be guaranteed incredible. Some of these folks that want to do these kinds of films need to stick to those franchises they were there for and have an understanding of.

I think individual reasons at this point are pretty clear, given how much it's been gone over. And I doubt it's a loyalty issue. On the contrary I'd be willing to bet that loyalty is itself partly at the heart of why some won't go see it if they feel that choices made for this film have not done proper justice for these characters.

I could be counted within that group... I will see it eventually, when my dollars aren't going to the people who I believe decided to go through with the choices I don't support, because it's the makers who will benifit from it, not TMNT... The Turtles aren't going anywhere no matter how well the movie does or doesn't do.

Personal opinion, I don't think it will do horribly or anything. Even if it doesn't end up doing otherworldly levels of fantastic due to competition, interest, advertising... I'm sure it will still at least hold it's own ok.

Placing my bets on being swamped by marketing very soon.

I think the lack of marketing is because, They are holding for something that will blow people away when they see it. How often you see something happen where they hold back on showing sometime, And when they finally reveal it, People were surprised by how good it looked.

Nah, the blame will be on the "rabid, negative fans" for not giving it a chance. j/k

X-Men Days of Futures Past comes to mind. That movie flew in under the radar until about the final week. But that turned out to be a great movie. Far exceeded most people's expections.

Yeah, not sure where he's getting that from. They had the full cast at SDCC promoting the film 10 months prior to release. They had 24 exclusive covers released for Empire. Their director continually tweeted updates/images during production. They had the terrible Hardee's commercials. They had tons of promotional images and websites dedicated to the history of the Sentinel program. This is just off the top of my head and not including the multiple trailers and TV spots.

Leibesman did say that he grew up watching TMNT in South Africa, in that old webcam interview with Collider. But I'm sure nobody believes it, because it's positive.

I'm not saying that the people in charge shouldn't be TMNT fans, (I'd feel better if I knew they were) but we did have TMNT 2007, which was the other extreme. Where Laird was the one involved, and he literally gave the director a list of rules. Kind of like how I had my doubts about the director of Sucker Punch and 300 at the helm of Man of Steel, but I could only complain so much after Superman Returns was written, directed and produced by Superman Movie Fan #1 Bryan Singer. Seemed like a natural next move...

They already had the big X posters with Xavier and Magneto on the walls when we went to see The Wolverine....

My main issue with the marketing is that every image they release is always lazily done like copy and paste images it's really annoying every image is recycled from another image, and half the time were not even suppose to see the Turtles, i mean their leaks.

It's the unreleased TV spots and trailers. Why air them all over and not take 30 seconds to upload them online? You'd be getting people pumped and it costs absolutely nothing to do. That, I still don't get.

My AT&T guy was talking it about the other day, when he was explaining the channels and all the other stuff he installed, he said how there were a lot of old school cartoons coming back and even a new ninja turtle movie coming out this year. So I guess the marketing is doing something, even if there isn't a lot

Yeah, you'd think at least on the movie's own darn website. They have done surprisingly little with that site, esp compared to all the fun stuff many other movie sites often include. Hm.

Posted this in the GOTG thread.. but it works for this thread too.. curious what the responses would be. There are so many threads with pretty much the same discussion.. but it seemed like it should go here too.

But being that it is such a hot topic on this forum, I thought I would ask him if he's heard of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie. He hadn't, didn't even recognize the title. I described some of it to him from the trailer, still didn't ring a bell. I thought that was interesting, considering how so many here think that GOTG has TMNT dominated in the marketing dept.

Perhaps.. just a theory.. the marketing team knows that the TMNT name is going to do a lot of the heavy lifting for this movie. A good trailer on TV 3-4 weeks ahead of release might be all they really need.

I know I am basing it off of one person, but I would consider him a very average person. There are probably many like him who have no clue what GOTG is. When doing battle with the TMNT nostalgia factor, I really think it is going to have a hard time. Yes, people who are really into movies, who are seeking out info on upcoming released, they have heard about GOTG and have seen what they've put out so far. But really, the average movie-goer is not and never will seek that out, but the day that the first TMNT trailer dropped, it spread like wildfire.

This marketing team isn't catering to the next level TMNT/movie fans like us. But they aren't hurting their chances at winning the GOTG vs TMNT battle in August, in my opinion. The average movie-goer is the one who makes up the vast majority, we are a small minority.
