Yea, but how do you know Ciro won't be using Renet at some point? What's to stop him from deciding to make up his own incarnation of her in the third or fourth season?

Fortunately Nick TMNT is not a popularity contest. And their target demographic doesn't know any TMNT characters anyway.

It's possible that April isn't completely human. She already is 'special' because of her animal mind reading, but there may be more of an explanation to that ability such as exposure to the mutagen via her father. And who's to say her father is human? Maybe there is a reason the kraang are after these particular scientists. Pure speculation at this point.

if April and her fathers are not humans then what will they be? Sure they are not Kraang or else we would have know it already. April has benn human in 87 2003 and IDW comic. It was only the Mirrage that she was not human and that was revealed after so many years. Just like Shredder was human in evry version of TMNT but not in 2003 cartoon

While we're on the subject, didn't an obscure character from the original cartoon recently have a cameo on the new show as a mutant? Ciro and the folks at Nickelodeon can do whatever the hell they want with the property. They can use any character they like from any iteration. They're the ones who decide who will or won't show up, not us!
I'd say Metalhead is even more obscure. I mean, sure the idea of a robot turtle isn't all that new... but rather than make their own version of a CyberTurtle or Turtledroid or what-have-you like 2K3 did with TurtleBot, they went back with the 80's design and character of Metalhead.

I kinda wouldn't call Leatherhead obscure in the same vein. I think most of us were kinda waiting around to see when he would appear.

When was it suggested she had animal mind reading? The monkey episode?

Yes, "Monkey Brains" was when her special ability to sense vibrations came into play.

If April isn't human, unless it's written like...unbelievably well, I'm not sure if I'd want to continue watching. Nick's April is already testing my patience with her age/'special' abilities/rude attitude/ninja training/one-sides crush with Don, that if they threw something else at her to make her uberomgawesome! it might just be the last straw for me. I've always loved April, but I personally watch TMNT for, you know, the Turtles. Not their sidekicks that take over.

I'm actually glad they have given April as much as they have. And I hope they do more. As a father to a little girl, the roles females play is less than to be desired. I like the fact that they are making her stronger and able to hang with the boys. Same goes for the exposure Donnie and mike are getting.focusing on intelligence and hernestness, with a healthy dose of feelings

I don't disagree that females often get the short end of the stick in television, but as a female myself, I don't like the stereotype that girls have to be physically tough in order to be on par with the guys. I've always preferred April as the more motherly role because she brings in that element of a maternal love and guidance that Splinter can't always give which IS just as important as anything else but seems to be ignored because it's not...I don't know, cool enough?. It seems like this April is given a lot of external traits (fighting ability, telepathy) and not a whole lot of internal development, just the fact that she's...um, head strong? Stubborn? Annoying? Yeah, just like every other 'feisty non-stereotypical' girl' on tv for tweens/teens nowadays. But I do agree its nice seeing Donnie and Mikey being used to explore those other very important traits which are sometimes ignored as well. But getting in touch with feelings doesn't have to be only about 'romance' or a 'girly' thing, so its frustrating that/s what April (and Don) is associated with.

When I said feelings I was thinking more along the lines of mikey and his feelings wether it be to find a friend (with the cat et al) or with his emotions in dealing with leatherhead.

In the nick verse however, she can't be the stereotypical mother figure, because she's the same age. And I don't think they have made her butch in any sense of the word, stereotypically or ironically. She balances the one sided relationship by being blind to Donnie's feelings. Once she becomes aware of his intentions things will change and will need to be addressed. I don't think this is too much different than how raph felt towards April in the movie, I would have liked to see the tension between Casey and raph played out a bit more as well.

But I rather see her be headstrong than reliant.

eh April does have to be kinda tough to make it on an action show. Think of all the kids wanting to play TMNT and the girl being forced to play as April and being forced to be the one needed rescuing. At least now the girl can pretend to kick ass with the rest of the boys.

that might be interesting... but like for an episode. Unlike Mary Sue Venus, she would already have April's personality (such as it is). But yeah... if better be the same episode that The Kraang have the Retromutagen gun in tow....

Well I meant the fans reaction, but I'm guessing the characters would have interesting reactions to it too.

What is this "fighting ability" you speak of? So far the closest April has done to effective combat is knocked out a distracted guy by kicking open a car door into him. That hardly qualifies her as being a Mary Sue; I'm sure she'll get tougher but she'll have to work at it, and while it's true she hasn't gotten many "internal" traits, I can't say anyone else has, either. There isn't a narrow enough focus for much character development so far.

You say that as a female, you resent the notion that every display of female competence has to be in the form of "toughness," but understand we're dealing with an action cartoon aimed at young boys, here. If a character can't do some clobbering, they don't want to watch that character for a long time, and certainly won't buy a toy of her (which, if she can't fight, might as well be a doll); April needs to get tough or get out.

Personally, I like the idea of giving her a sort of cognitive gift because it actually allows her to hold her own while remaining human. It wouldn't be right to let her deck a superpowered mutant the way one of the Turtles could, but she could at least evade its attacks while the Turtles counterattack.

I don't remember the show saying she has telepathy. April doesn't act like she's a mind reader. She only has a stronger sense of instinct/female intuition, which could be very useful as a martial artist.

I'm also annoyed with the Mary Sue brand with April, since so far she hasn't hijacked the plot/single handedly rescue Splinter and the Turtles/is so beautiful and intelligent the world bows to her greatness. She shouldn't be called one at all.

As for her geared as a teenage ninja. Let her. If Sokka from Avatar the Last Airbender can become a competent swordsman for one episode, I don't see why April should not either.

it's more then instinct or female intuition. Splinter got the same deal, only for April it flows naturally apparently.

It's not Telepathy either. More like she's an Empath of the more supernatural kind, since she is tuned to the Universe.
