That's one really strong vacuum you live in, to not know that Angry Black Man and Angry Black Woman are two very prevalent stereotypes in the US.

Let's look at Casey's history. Originally a sociopath who finally unhinges after watching too much crappy 80s television. Armed with sporting equipment, and donning a hockey mask, he assaults and batters those wot lurk in the alleys of New York City.

What about that says,

I am not making assumptions. It is racist. The reason for Cybercubed suggestion is because a personality that is angry and poor fits the black people more then white. He wants to change the ethnicity so it fits racial stereotyping.

There is no such thing as a positive stereotype. I said it right in my comment why it was positive. April is a character that has excellent skills in computers and is strong willed, none of these traits are negative. Thus April breaks away from any stereotype which makes her a good character.

Cybercubed wants to change the ethnicity of characters to fit racial stereotypes, which is insensitive and offensive. I can't believe a mod is defending a offensive and insensitive suggestion.

The only one reading into it is you. Casey being black doesn't mean that he has to fit the "Angry Black Man" stereotype. It's ASSUMING as much that's racist.

And saying April would be great as a strong black woman..."because she doesn't need a man" plays into a stereotype in itself.

You accuse Cubed of trolling, but part of me has to wonder the one who turned this thread into anything other than a, 'What's keeping Casey from being anything but "Base Wasp"?' discussion.

I'm going to treat this topic as if it was:

Hey, Casey could totally be black in the sequel!

And with that as the starting premise I'm instantly reminded of the internet campaign to make Donald Glover the next Spider-man.

You can read his thoughts on the fallout that...well fell out here.

I could very easily see a Casey Jones who lives in the basement of his widowed mother's apartment building. Maybe he tried to get to college on a hockey scholarship, maybe he didn't even try. Though now he's barely making ends meet by being a bouncer at a dive bar and getting room and board covered by being the building's handyman.

The neighborhood he's in is in that down place before gentrification starts to reabsorb it, and so there's a lot of gang activity. Maybe he's sick of the Stop and Frisk procedures that treat him like a criminal even though he isn't one. Maybe he had a friend gunned down after buying skittles and an Arizona Iced Tea. But something in him gets sick of waiting for the cops to do their jobs.

So he puts on a mask and does their job for them.

I don't know if I can buy this. I was raised by NY parents, my father was heavily influenced by his German heritage, but funny enough, I was born and raised in Florida, and people swear up and down that my accent sounds more Spanish than anything, and I don't have any Spanish in my recent blood. But, I grew up around Spanish friends, and maybe their way of talking rubbed off on me. Then of course, when I go back up to New York, relatives think my southern drawl is cute as heck. So, I have a southern drawl/Spanish kind of accent, despite my parents being from NY, the products of German and Italian immigrants.

The Turtles all were probably influenced to a degree, the TV the most. Donny would have a normal accent because of his work with electronics. Leo, more formal because of Splinter. Mikey more laid back because of the TV, and Raphael, I totally can buy the urban/Brooklyn accent due to him going top side more than the others.
