Mutation Situation was a let down, in first episode of the season plus...they really thought the catch them all plot line is a good idea for a story arc. I mean really?

The Legend of Kuro Kabuto is better because it not only introduced an interesting new character, but re-introduced one that previously seemed unimportant (referring to the Russian dude).

The Mutation Situation revolved around the Kraang...been there, done that.

Understand that Mutation Situation has its merits, but I have issues with several things:
  • The Kraang are back, but no mention of the Technodrome after seeing it lit up again at the bottom of the sea previously. They got the hover ship back instead.
  • Out of character for Mikey to make fun (calling him Wingnut?) and not showing sympathy of April's dad being turned into a mutant. Maybe the Turflytle costume took away his heart-squish detector. Donnie seems to be the only one freaking out while Mikey continues to tease him about Kirby becoming a vampire.
  • Felt rush as a single episode and left me wanting more after the cliff-hanger ending which is not satisfying at all. If I could have it my way, it should be fused with Mutagen Man Unleashed to continue April's story where it left off after leaving the turtles, and introduce Casey Jones. Now THAT would have been a fantastic Season 2 premiere!

As for The Legend of the Kuro Kabuto, it holds itself quite well despite being surrounded by much greater eps (I'm referring to TWoTC-TLotKK-ViM which I consider a 3-parter). In fact it's one of the more memorable ep for me that actually kick-started me to post more actively in this forum.
  • Glad that they introduced the background of Zeck & Steranko and their love/hate relationship before the action starts. Steranko being a rare artifact collector and Zeck being a master thief to help Steranko obtain his collections. This gave them much more character development than just being Shredder's thugs in the OT.
  • I always cheer when backstories are being explained in "comic form", in this case the Kuro Kabuto's. They usually reveal a lot of plot history that are interesting/important to know. And I believe those motion comics are usually hand drawn by Ciro himself.
  • The sudden realization: that Russian arms dealer from Enemy of My Enemy is Rocksteady! I love these kind of reveals, just like the Rahzar moment, and when Pulverizer became Mutagen Man.

So I'm going with the Kuro Kabuto.

Kuro Kabuto.

Mutation situation just felt like the writers just wanted bring the show into more or less the same status quo as season 1 (missing dad and Kraang mischief) which I believe was a bit of a mistake. Maybe we wouldn't have Casey join the group in the same way if the whole "missing dad" thing was not in place, but c'mon, we know he would have joined up anyway.

Kuro Kabuto may seem like a throwaway episode, a thief stealing a helmet and nothing has changed by the end? But since we know who the thief and his employer will be, and the fact that I don't think the helmet is that irrelevant after all, there's is indeed some set-up.

Didn't really like the middle/end of Kuro Kabuto....

but it introduced a human villain (for now) and it was better than Mutation Situation.

The Mutation Situation was interesting watch the first time, but just hasn't aged well due to the cannister thing fizzling out by midway through the season and the Kirby plot thing a little stupid. With Kuro Kabato, in addition to learning more about the Foot, was a critical moment in Karai's development and had some good action in it. Kuro Kabato for the landslide.
