View Full Version : TMNT at the box office

I hear what you're saying, Fledermaus. And I agree...Animated films, for the most part, don't get the same level of respect as their live-action counterparts. I know a few douchebags who refuse to see the new TMNT movie specifically because it wasn't live-action.
Idiots.
This is very true in your statement. My best friend has 3 brothers, ages 14, 22 and 30. The 30 and 22 year old love the Turtles, but they don't want to see them in cgi. Only the live action suits, or cgi imitating live action suits with a real life background will do. And their feelings are rubbing off on the little brother.
And as for the commercials. I still havent seen one since the Friday that the Turtles have been released.
Yesterday, I watched Ugly Betty and CSI like I always do. I've seen commercial spots during those shows in the past, but not anymore.
However, word is, the buzz about the movie on the internet is definitely catching some attention. People are stopping by TMNT on IMDb, stunned that there is another movie, and are shocked that is doing well at the box office.(Considering the lack of advertising, the movie is doing quite well)
I saw a television ad yesterday, during prime time. It was a cut of the new SMG/Stewart/Fishburne trailer.
They're still advertising.

Well TMNT is currently around 41mil:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=tmntcg.htm
This will be its third weekend. Last weekend it only made 9mil so if it doesn't do at LEAST that same amount this time then I guess that's it.
When all is said and done I think they'll make total somewhere in the 50mil range unless magically more people start seeing it but at this point I don't think its likely.

I think it has legs. You will notice that was up by 200,000 dollars from the day before. I know many people at school who are going to see it-- taking grandchildren and children-- this weekend.
Oh, and it's made 50 mil. world-wide.
I know that we're heading towards the "blockbusters" soon-- but still, I think it will hang on and make some pretty serious money.

I'm just hoping it breaks my prediction of 60mil domestic.:| TMNT should profit at least as much as it cost to produce.

Worldwide and domestically, TMNT is at 51 million.
It's still one of the more popular talked about movies at the moment. Seems there is more buzz going on about TMNT than Meet the Robinsons.
Wonder if this movie could get a best fight sequence nomination at this years MTV movie awards. They are around the corner, right? That could generate some awesome buzz. (Remember how popular Scream got when it won the award over Independence Day!)
Can we start a petition to get WB to get TMNT into the MTV awards? It's great publicity for the movie!

*sigh*... TMNT dropped from 6 to 9th (estimated) at the box office on Friday. On the upside, it did rake in about another 2mil, bringing its domestic total up to 43,654,000.
:) :|
Maybe if TMNT plays for a really really long time in theaters, it will make at least 60mil...

I say if Blunder Brothers doesn't give us a sequel us TMNT fans should boycott any and everything WB. Their piss poor advertising did nothing for this movie. I should've know from the start that Blunder Brothers wasn't behind it 100% when they really only started promoting it too late in the game.
Again, TMNT gets involved with another shoddy @ss company that has very little respect for the property.
Sorry. I'm just:flaming::x

Yep, I agree. Also demanding it to be a PG movie I think also kind of restricted it. After seeing the box office explosion of 300, I think the movie going audience wants to see action, not a family oriented movie.

How come there was never any advertising of (CHECK OUT THE NUMBER ONE MOVIE IN AMERICA!) When they could have! But no. I'm just getting tired of the Turtles being sh!t on by the studios. We had it from CBS with the old cartoon. New Line started it with the older movies to bow down to overprotective parents, and the new toon is getting crapped on by Fox.
Now WB is doing the same thing. These studios are sure as hell lucky that the green machine isn't real, or the execs would've had a sai up where the sun don't shine a long time ago!

What? Are you kidding me?
If anything, TMNT is garnering spectacular word-of-mouth because it was crafted to please the fans -- e.i., it stays true to the characters, the franchise, and the past films. I've dragged more than a few skeptical friends to the theatre and they thought it was simply awesome.
Saying that TMNT appeals only to hardcore fans is an insult to the filmmakers and artists behind it. Seriously. Of course their main goal was to appeal to the longtime fans, but the true versatility of the film is that it's so well-made it can capture the imagination of non-believers, too.

First of all, with what's currently on the table and with the current rates, I would expect the movie to reach 60 million $ on tuesday. However, monday, tuesday and wednesday, the movie will get released in France, Germany, Austria and Brazil. That will give a boost.
By next sunday I think we'll be up to $67 million world wide. And just when they will start removing the movie from the cinemas, South Korea will pop up the 26th... now, here comes the interesting part... where's Japan in all this? Boxofficemojo doesn't include Japan's boxoffice for this movie so I would reckon it hasn't bee released there yet, so here's to hoping it gets released there at the same-ish time as South-Korea. These two alone could provide ~$5 million. And then there might be a lot of other countries where it hasn't been released who won't provide much individually but the sum will provide a boost as well (HK, China, Taiwan, Mexico and so on).
If it indeed hasn't been released in Japan, and will be, plus in a host of other countries, I'm predicting $80 million for this movie from the cinemas.
It will comfortably beat the third movie, but won't come close to the second (which in turn did not come close to the first).
Considering this movie probably is better than all the previous turtle movies (just look at the imdb score), clearly, the era when ninja turtles ruled the world is over. Still, it's not half bad is it... with some good DVD-sales (which it probably will get), the possibility of a sequel is very real.

Yeah, and I guess there's only 100 TMNT fans that exist in the world.
Personally, I think Blunder Brothers wanted it to fail because they set it up to do just that. The question is why? Could have something to do with the cartoon deal they didn't get back in the day when they started coming up with designs for the show and then Mirage went with 4Kids? Maybe they were just waiting for the right time to get even? LOL!! Yeah, I'm probably reading too much into this.
I was pretty sure this movie would've done great. I mean, seeing it fail is like taking a punch to the gut or seeing your child getting beat up by bullies and being powerless to stop it. It's sad and sickening.

Maybe it's just a sign that no one else cares anymore. The Turtles heyday is over. There will always be us hardcore fans, but the general public just doesn't care about the franchise anymore.
Lets stop with all the conspiracy theories. WB didn't "set up" the movie to fail. Why the hell would they invest any money in it, if not for the hope that it would do well? And please, all this stuff about boycotting? That's the most childish thing I've ever heard.

I would have said that it was people who had entered the cinemas unaware of the 2K3 toons existence that put the film in jeopardy. Not one of my friends who went with me knew who Karai was and neither did I up until two months before the movie. Her introduction in the movie was pretty much non existant. Instead the focus was on Max Winters. Who although was a main focus of the movie, wasn't as much of a villain you "love to hate".
Bear in mind, I don't consider the movie to be bad. I think it's a movie I will watch countless times. But for those fans of the old toon. Or just anyone who has held any interest in TMNT in the slightest may have been a little dissapointed, due to lack of familiar villains or heavy violence.
If the film had been given a higher rating, I would be interested in seeing it's position in the charts. I would believe it would still be higher due to peoples curiosity as to what an adult turtles movie would be like. I know WB wanted to reach a younger audience, but a higher rating hasn't stopped various franchises before. Take a look at Spiderman, thats a perfect example of aiming at all audiences and it cleans up at the box office. Heck even going up to a 15 rated movie like Terminator 2 never hurt. When I was young I had all the toys.
Anyway, I think my rant has gone on long enough. Lets just hope that the DVD profits alone will give enough reason to make a sequel and preferably with a little blood shed this time.
Maybe it's just a sign that no one else cares anymore. The Turtles heyday is over. There will always be us hardcore fans, but the general public just doesn't care about the franchise anymore.
A lot of them do care. But it's a love-hate relationship. TMNT is not the teh kewl. Maybe Kev was wrong about not casting Ashton Kutcher. ;)

I read a bunch of this thread. I don't know what is drawing you guys to be so negative about the films success. Movie has made money already over production cost in a little over 2 weeks, correct? I don't know what you guys think WB are expecting but this weekend it has already made 5 million. Even if it did this for another month before pulling out of theatres it will be past the 60 million mark. Not to mention other launches in other regions should bring this to over 100 million. Then you have DVD sales. That more than doubles their initial investments. I think they will do another one. If i missed something that wb said please repost it. Otherwise I think we are just stressing out too much and should just enjoy our day in the sun. Oh by the way I have frequently seen the toys sold out at stores in my areas. That really makes me feel good about the movies success. One last thing about the movie. Primarily kids see these films so please keep in mind they are probably going to matinee showings. So the earnings might be lower because of it. Not lack of popularity.

TMNT and Wild Hogs are not what I would consider box office competitors. On the other hand, Grindhouse, Blades of Glory, Shooter, 300 etc are scouring some of TMNT's audience. Yet it still managed to pull in ~5 mil. This does not say 'failure' to me.
And lots of people like Tim Allen, even if you don't. The Wild Hogs movie poster has 3 other Big Hollywood stars, and I'm sure at least some of them went on the talk show circuit to build buzz. Big Names ain't a guarantee of quality, especially to people like me who are not really attracted to mainstream humor, but lots of other people like that stuff. So don't paint such a bleak picture.

Actually, I saw Wild Hogs in it's opening weekend. It's more for the older crowd (45, 50 year olds) but it was a fun movie.
I imagine Wild Hogs is doing good because the older people who are in retirement or semi retirement, have the time to go see it, where as kids are in school and the 20 and 30 year olds are stuck at work.
Could also be that the mainstream audience just didn't like TMNT.
(But I'm still sticking with my two theories, one is that the film wasn't advertised enough. I know so many people who have no clue that the Turtles are out with a new movie. The second is that I think the PG rating hurt it some. It should have been allowed to be marketed towards the teenagers and young adults, especially since that is the age group that I saw mostly at the theaters.)

Those two theories are really the most understandable. I think if the trailers were a little more serious, and didn't include the burp or the your mom thing(maybe one, but not both), people wouldn't be so biased against it.
But yeah, this should'nt have been PG, it's not like PG-13 would have alientated anybody.

I didn't enjoy it quite as much this time as I did the first, because I knew what was coming up, and the first time I saw it it was with a fellow TMNT fan.
The theatre was about 75% filled, with mostly 18-24 year olds....including a group of 15 or so that just had to talk loudly throughout the entirely of the movie, making comments and such, drowning out the movie for many.

So what's the total worldwide gross thus far? I don't think the movie has to do exactly $100 million domestically to get a sequel. I think overseas the movie is going to get a lot. Okay, I just checked Box Office Mojo International, and for the weekend of March 30-April 1, 2007, TMNT grossed $3,871,904, bringing the total worldwide gross (at that point) to $9,646,003. I didn't see this weekend's gross listed, and we know that we still have a few countries to open in, so that total is slightly off. We're still raking in the dough. ;)
looking at that link and how the numbers are still up, maybe they were smart when they released it, they really got the Easter weekend numbers, also, end of spring break. and by now most kids who have seen it have told their friends who can go. not bad

It's about to hit the cheap one here. I was more than a little aggrevated that it didn't go full two weeks at the Glass Sword Cinema 6 (the bigger of our two theatres here), but that's just the way that they do things.
Anyway, tickets THERE are $7.00 for adults (which they GOT from me opening night for the TMNT:D ), and they're only $4.00 for EVERYBODY at the Family Cinema (I kid you not; that's it's actual name!), which is where TMNT is going from the Glass Sword. Consequently, my niece Ashley and I have another movie-watching date for when it hits there.
The only "bad" thing is that it debuts THERE on Friday the 13th (NOT one of my favorite days, but oh, well..........................), but getting to go to the movie again will pretty much over-ride that, I think.
And IF I can work it right (and have enough money), I'm gonna see if I can't go back for a solo-viewing before it moves from the FC...knock on wood.
(Actualy, I WAS planning on doing that this PAST weekend, only to find that it was already OUT of the Glass Sword. Drat them.).

This is a long thread, but many people seem to be worried about the gross. Many are defending the film's box office success, but I thought I would chime in and emphasize this success.
As stated by countless others, TMNT has made well beyond its production budget. It was made cheaply for a reason. Despite what anybody studio exec or producer publically said, nobody realistically expected this movie to make $100 million domestic. Not in March, not with direct competition from Meet the Robinsons, not with a property that has been out of the public eye for many years.
A lot of people have complained about the advertising. In truth, it was ultimately the right decision not to promote the thing as much as say, a Spider-man or 300. Advertising will only take you so far with a Ninja Turtle movie. The people who wanted to see this movie saw the movie. Rave reviews from critics wouldn't have helped much. Audience reaction was high, but the broad spectrum of moviegoers will ultimately pass on TMNT in favor of a Disney film. Warner Bros. was smart to not go crazy with the advertising. More money saved equals more money earned.
DVD is where the money is at. Studios get to take home a solid profit on each disc sold, whereas box office accumulations are split with the theaters. Nothing is a sure thing, but my feeling is that it'll do solid business on DVD. Box office grosses are overrated, especially on movies with small to modest budgets. Let all the those moronic internet writers go on about how much TMNT dropped in the second weekend or how it was the lowest grossing Turtle movie. This kind of talk doesn't bug the studio at all. TMNT will show a nice profit for all involved, and that will lead to an eventual sequel, be it a theatrical release or DVD.
So maybe it's unnecessary for another person telling everyone not to worry, but take it from someone who follows this kind of stuff all the time: From the studio's standpoint, and from a profit standpoint, 'TMNT' is a hit. Any studio would take 15 TMNTs over 1 or 2 risky blockbusters.

Oh come on. It will help if they put more effort on advertising, seriously. Do you expect people just to go see a movie just because they want it?
(Seriously,if they make a spiderman movie,I thought the quality is like their classic series' drama if no promo was made) Promotion and advertising(like commercial, trailers, posters and banners) will help trigger their interest and want to see the movie, hence a little more work with the advertisement will help tremendously.

Advertising was fine with me. I mean it was rather clever to get konami and ubisoft to rerelease the classic game arcade and nes on xbla and wii. Plus I saw the commercials countless times on many different primetime tv shows that my wife tapes. I have seen it on G4 as well and assume it has been on during kids programming (I have not been able to watch much with my schedule). Again the toys have been sold out many times i have been at the walmarts and targets around me. I think those are just as important as pumping out any ads. Every little bit helps. Sidenote: One time I was near the turtle figs a little kid ran up screaming ninja turtles (felt like 1990) to me. He begged his mom and she said maybe for easter. So yeah it is easy to think they should be doing more but I am pleasantly surprised with all they have done. Since this was a low budget film, they were most likely gaugeing the publics response before going all out with the next film. It is just a matter of time my friends.

The critics sicken me. They seriously mauled this movie because of what it was. A CGI movie that was marketed at kids but clearly for young adults.
They would say the show was crap to I bet. They can't handle something that is aimed at a fanbase. Which makes no sense because Grindhouse is totally aimed at a fanbase and it got great reviews. Then again GH was way more entertaining but still TMNT had the family movie qualities. And a message that I think anyone can relate to.

But, how much did it cost to pay them, and yet, not really "exploit" them for the movie, as compared to what a regular voice actor would have been paid?
When the sequel is made, will it cost less, since the initial designs of the Turtles has already been tackled?

I think they saved money by not going for A-listers with egos.
I mean, looking at these Pixar and Dreamworks movies, most of the budget goes into nabbing the big names.

This thread is depressing because people who don't understand the term "success" continue to complain about how poorly the movie has performed.
Once again:
50 million at the box office. 35 million production budget. Any movie that makes more than the production budget in theaters is considered a hit within studio standards.
Worldwide grosses will continue to go up.
Advertising costs were purposefully low, because all the advertising you people are demanding wouldn't have gotten too many more people to see the movie. Advertising on the level you guys demand is incredibly expensive. WB intentionally spent the money they did. This isn't the first movie they've ever released. Not wanting to change the release date, they knew excessive advertising against a new Disney movie would have been pointless. Blame the release date. Blame the crowded market. Blame your own stubborn mind for not accepting the facts of the TMNT box office case: It's a hit. Period. End of story. Let's move on.
DVD is where the real money is at. A children's property that performed well at the box office (which TMNT did) always sells well on DVD. The press goes on and on about box office failures, but half the time "failures" recoup losses on home video. The general public doesn't seem to understand why these studios continue to make a thousand movies a year. It's because they lose money on very few of them.
Toys have sold incredibly well. Video game is selling and renting well. This stuff helps.
So please. End this discussion now. People complaining about the box office "failure" simply don't know what they're talking about. And their lack of knowledge is getting irritating.
Last night, I accompanied a friend who wanted to see TMNT with me. It was one of the smaller cinema rooms, but it was pretty packed. There were so many adults there I seriously thought we had walked into the wrong room! Everyone seemed to enjoy it. My friend said "the critics must be on crack" for dissin' such a fun flick. :D
Oddly, before we had met one of my friend's friends at the mall prior to the movie, and it turns out she watched >> and 2K3... and she started talking to me about the differences from the old toon. She was having a really bad day, but when she talked about TMNT her face lit up. I thought that was interesting. :)

I was just watching "An Evening with Kevin Smith 2" last night and he said something very interesting. He was talking about his movies at the box office and about DVD sales. How his movies usually only make like $30 million etc. and people who hate him say "ha ha, now he'll never make another movie again. Silent Bob is dead forever."
Kevin said that they just don't know about how studios really make their money. It's all about DVD's, and that even if you make a tiny profit it's all good. It's better than losing money. Because in theaters studios get maybe 45to 50 percent of the profits, while DVD's they get 100 percent. As example Kevin said that Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back made $30 million in theaters and $37 million on DVD...even more than in theatrically. His actual quote is "these days the REAL money is in DVD sales."
And this is a guy who's talked directly with Harvey Weinstein, who also released TMNT. So I believe they are happy with the grosses (at least happier than they are with Grindhouse).
Plus think about Final Destination. It cost about the same, made the same money $50 million, and now there's a trilogy of them. So why not TMNT have a trilogy...plus now they know when not to release it, make it pg-13, etc. so they can learn from past mistakes. So I think it'll be all good :D

Thank you for this post. We would have all loved for TMNT to have been #1 for three weeks straight andto bring in Pirates of the Caribbean type of revenue, but lets get real people. Few people in the biz expected TMNT to make #1 at all, and while there is certainly no guarantee of a sequel, its performance thus far has opened the door of possibility.
WB gave the movie a chance nobody else wanted to give it. While they probably won't be around for the second time (if there is one), they played it safe and played it smart with TMNT. The more money they invested in it, the greater the expectations. Would everyone here really have preferred WB to pump the kind of advertising budget into TMNT that would have REQUIRED a 100 mil return just to recoup their investment?
We should be grateful for every bit of TMNTs success. How many "kid" properties emerge from the ashes as TMNT has?

I think something else that disappointed people is the new TMNT movie isn't recognized on the same level as the other comic book movies.
Look at Spiderman, X-men, Batman and even Superman Returns...they did amazingly well.
The good thing is TMNT only had a 34mil budget while the others were MUCH higher, but its a shame that TMNT's "revival" wasn't as big a splash as the big DC and Marvel characters.

Yes, it's a shame. But life is good, and life goes on. I'm going tomorrow-- twice if I can swing it, as I've been working hard and deserve to act like I used to when I was younger. I'd go, then eat lunch and go again. Granted, movies were like $3.50 then for matinees, and now it's $8.00 a pop, I think that I will still attempt it. If I smuggle in my own candy and pop, that will save me another eight bucks!
And like Normdog says-- well, as I interpret it-- this movie is not a failure. I look at the daily stuff as well as what the other movies currently out have done in similar time-- and though as of Friday TMNT has dropped to 15th place, it still shows an "up" sales/wise, despite loss of theaters. My sister lives in this really boondocks place, and it's not opened there yet.
But yes-- DVDs is where it's at nowadays, and I think that this movie has done well on its own.

The Punisher is also owned by Marvel. And Marvel is a company who can afford to give it a sequel if they want.

^I think the problem when consciously making something "kid-friendly" is the assumption that kids = stupid. There's a line, of course. But if you keep thinking "it's for the kids", you simplify things to the point of boredom for everyone, including the very demographic you were pandering to.
I'm thinking of Cody as a type this. He's obviously meant to be the character all children are supposed to "live" through. I can just see the thought process: "Want to fight with the Ninja Turtles? Want to train under Master Splinter? Well, now you can, by living vicariously through Cody Jones!"
*balks*
It's like having that perpetually annoying kid in any sentai show. I'm sorry, but as a kid, I wanted to watch giant robots, sentai, monsters. Not other whiny little kids.

where have you been hearing this rumors? All that I have heard is that if there will be a sequel then it will take several years to develop.
Mostly at work. I work at a technological company that has contracts with several cgi companies, including IMAGI! We also do alot of design work on projectors and directorial lifts, cameras, the works. (But our biggest contracts come from the government, who invest alot into security type cameras and similar devices.)
I've seen some hints on myspace and IMdb boards, but those are all hearsay. Well, so is my place, but it's not like people don't like the Turtles. It's either the marketing of the movie was poor, or that the editing of the movie didn't strike the crowd the right way. It's a possibility that people were going in expecting something similar like the original movie, and were dissapointed with the lack of a more adult oriented product.

This is exactly right. Several people in one of my computer classes all agreed that they expected the movie to be more mature than it was. People primarily want ninja turtles, not teenage turtles. Personally, I think it was a great deal more mature than Turtles 2 and 3, but maybe not Turtles 1. Here's hoping. >_<

yeah. Loose the kiddie rating. Kids who watch them were under parent supervision anyway. The majority people are teenagers and young adults(and adults),that's what I see in the theathre anyway.
So plan your target market carefully next time and it'll bring more cash for the movie.;)

^ Yeah it is very difficult to find the middle ground. You have mutant turtles who people tend to refer to as cute. Then you have ninjas and violence. Kids are drawn to mutant humanoid turtles but kids shouldn't always be exposed to violence. Shooting for a specific rating would be a tough job. I know I would not want to be responsible for doing it. And if I was, I would try to play it as safe as possible.
Well TMNT added another 2+ mil during this weekend, and honestly I didn't expect it to break 2 mil, but it did. With this the film has broken the 50 mil mark. There would be no excuse NOT to make a sequel.
I will say this though. Making it hard rating could hurt it. More kids then true fans watched TMNT rather then reading the original comics, so there has to be a border, or it's an automatic fail. I myself never knew a comic existed before TMNT aired in the 80's/90's.
I will tell you guys some info, I have never said too much about, if at all, on these forums, I have many contacts in hollywood, and am - myself - a screenwriter. My cousin won Sundance, and may want me as a writer (1 of 6,) for a documentary on HBO. Some friends I've made in hollywood would be Stephanie Claxton, Gray Fredrickson, Fritz Keirsh, and Channing Dungey (all very nice people.) Now I am not saying I know all, but here is my point. Back in 2001 I discussed with Capcom, gaining the rights to Megaman X (not the original as it is too kiddish in my eyes.) They asked for a proposal to which I haven't responded yet. However, I have been keeping an eye on if anyone has/is picking it up, and once I get everything ready, I will talk with them again. What's the hold up? Well a few things... If I make MMX, how do I tailor to people who don't know about it, but draw them in, and how do I appease the fans? So I thought about a few things (which I will not disclose here so ideas are not taken, yes I'm paranoid.) After thinking about a few things, I believe I can appease the fans, make a live action version that will not look dumb, and draw in a crowd with a tale about a robot with self determination, and great action pieces. However, if I only appeased the fans, everyone else, even fans of sci-fi. may be turned off.
Think of it like this, if a Metroid movie were made, where is the sense of danger if only one person is in danger? That would make a very boring movie. There has to be more then one character, but since Samus has been focal in all games, introducing more characters could be a bad thing. Could be good, but that's the risk you take... However, that risk would be easier then making TMNT for the theatres with a hard rating that may truly be the downfall of the franchise since so many kids and parents always saw the Turtles as a kids program.
Anyhow enough rambling, WB would be stupid not to distribute a sequel, as it held its own since its release, and look at awesome movies like Grindhouse. Went from number 3 or 4 to 10 in one week. TMNT held its own in two hectic weeks of releases. A disney movie, another Frank Miller movie, a Will Ferell movie, and a couple of others. For three weeks it stayed in the top ten, Grindhouse won't even do that, and that's saying a lot because both directors are well respected in hollywood.
On a last note, Weinstein said, its sequel time dudes, and I will stress this, I'd listen to him. He's the one who decides if there is a sequel, he just has to take it to another studio.

I'm just curious why no one (that I have read at least, sorry if i haven't read all the threads in this section) but everyone mentions the fact that this movie has made $50 million, and it's budget was $35 million. Which shows a profit. However, I never see anyone mentioning the advertisement cost of the movie (which is separate than the production budget). It probably isn't mentioned because the studio has reported what they paid for advertisement (as it is possible for that cost to go SLIGHTLY up by one or 2 more tv ads, although I think they are done). But I would guess about $10 million for advertisement was spent. In comparison Star Wars Episode 3 spent $15 million I believe. I think $10 mil is a good guess. Which then brings the total cost to $45 million. I was, also, thinking (this is my thinking, as I have no proof to base this on) but since TMNT is based on a franchise, wouldn't Mirage get a cut of the tickets sales. Even if they make 5% of box office sales, then that $50 million becomes $45 million, which would equal the cost. Maybe that' why Mr. Gray said they wanted $100 million domestic to guarantee the sequal. Because it would take more than $50 million to make a profit (from just the domestic theater release). I know the movie has made another $16 million oversees and dvd sales will bring more profit, but I'm just saying does anyone agree with me on the advertisement and being a licensed movie meaning this movie isn't making as much as people thought it made?

Do they not count advertising as part of the budget? I'm guessing they probably don't, but it's worth asking, right?
EDIT: Besides, if Episode 3 spent $15 million on advertising then there's no way TMNT spent even $10 million. Episode 3 was advertised constantly before, during, and after the movie was released. TMNT hasn't been advertised anywhere close to that much. I'd give it $5-8 million tops on advertising.

There is an essay at Box Office Prophets you should check out, it deals with the issue of how to determine whether a film was a "success" or not. I believe it is linked to from the front page.
As to your basic, question, I don't agree. This movie had a pretty bare bones advertising budget, and the various promotional licensing (toys, game etc.) seems to have been a huge windfall for all parties involved.
There are other factors to consider, of course, such as TV broadcasting rights, but my real point is that only a small number of people on this earth know exactly how profitable TMNT is/will be. The budget/domestic box office measuring stick is a very broad one that has been developed as a basic, but not thorough, indicator of a film's success. There are many exceptions, such as Kevin Smith films, that buck the trend and keep getting sequels because they are profitable at the end of the day, despite not having a great budget-to-box office intake ratio.

i probably shouldn't have used star wars budget to compare it to because it APPEARS that the movie was advertised a lot, which isn't true. You saw a TON of star wars promo, true, but it wasn't advertisement for the movie. You'd see star wars characters on doritos, pepsi, clothes, action figures, movies, etc. but you didn't see star wars commercials for star wars the movie (well, barely $15 million worth). Star wars has a REALLY small advertising budget for a big movie. Because of the fact that so many brands have star wars stuff on it when a movie comes out, and those brands advertise their product with star wars on it, that it seems like a lot. For example I saw more commercials for Episode 3 the VIDEO GAME, than the movie. That doesn't factor into the $15 million adv. budget since it factors in the episode 3 GAME advertising budget. I still think it $10 million is likely, but I could be wrong.

Ok. I was looking through boxoffice mojo.
When TMNT is compared to the Punisher in terms of box office success, I think TMNT kicked it's ass. (Punisher made back exactly what it cost in the domestic BO.)
But then people like to also compare TMNT to Fantastic Four. That movie cost 100 million to make, but it raked in 150 million plus domestic, and over 300 million world wide.
So realistically, what is the chance of TMNT getting a sequel. Co-workers are optimistic, but I tend to be somewhat negative sometimes. I hear rumors that it's the sequel is being talked about in hollywood. But rumors are just that, rumors.

I don't think any of us can say for certain whether there will be a good chance of a sequal or not, we're just guessing as we go along.

Punisher made about 10 million after it's first 4 weeks (I did heavy rounding, so the exact number will be different). If TMNT does exactly what that movie did, it'll end up with 60 million. So far TMNT's been doing better than Punisher, so if it keeps up like that it could end up closer to 70 million. Maybe I'm just overly optimistic, but 70 million doesn't seem too far from 100 million.
I've kind of been interpreting the situation as 100 million = anyone would make a sequel, they'd be foolish not too. Less than 100 million doesn't guarantee a sequel, but it also doesn't guarantee no sequel.

It is very hard to say if it will get a sequel...I know that we would love for it to. As mentioned before, the thought of producing a sequel is up in the air. There are some things that might help it. Right now, it is hard to rent or obtain a copy of the video game for every version. The other merchandises are probably helping it too. So, the movie is holding on its own pretty well. Also, I would like to note that my local Blockbuster puts out the original movies for the theaterical ran movies. DVD sales/rentals are going to spawn the sequel not the popularity at the box office. Look at Austin Powers. It performed miserably in Theaters. Why? Because everyone waited for it to come out of DVD to rent or buy. Plus word of mouth. It was never intended to have Sequel even. Because of the DVD rentals and purchases it spawned 2 sequels. The 2nd and 3rd films made a ton of money. So you never know.
Right now they may say unless it makes 100 million domestically they will not make a sequel, but if the DVD sales/rentals go through the roof then a sequel WILL see the light of day.

I think it's very unlikely for TMNT to reach 100m. Possibly, around 60m-65m, IMO.
Anyway, TMNT is doing great. Its return profit ratio is much better than other WB movies. Currently, return profit for TMNT is more than 50% (domestic) and this is just for 4 weeks.
Compare to 'V for Vendetta', it stayed in theaters for 15 weeks and generated only 30.5% return profit. 'Cats & Dogs' made 55% return in 18 weeks. 'The Departed' made 47% return in 24 weeks. 'Superman Returns' made a loss of 25%.
I would be satisfied just to see TMNT make 100% profit domestically (68m).

Have they actually said they won't make a sequel if it earns less than 100 million? I know they want 100 million, but as I said, that has seemed like the guarantee point for a sequel. Anything less than 100 million doesn't guarantee a sequel, but doesn't automatically rule it out -- they'll have to weigh the pros and cons then.

I went back to get a more accurate number on my "about 10 million" estimate on Punisher. I looked at the wrong column and just added up it's first 4 weekends and accidentally counted those as full week totals. After it's first 4 full weeks, Punisher actually made about $1.7 million. The good news is that TMNT has been performing much better than that movie, though.

I was also thinking. The movie studios like to go with a formula, the formula that works scenario. In releasing movies that people will see. While TMNT is no Harry Potter or 300, it sure is no Superman Returns, and WB might look to TMNT as another way to make more profit, in that it does bring in a good sized fan based.
Also, maybe the next time, they'll play with a PG-13 to see what kind of pull that will have at the box office. But there are just too many uncertainties to rigth off a sequel because this movie can't reach a 100 million domestic.

We're making it harder, not impossible to find TMNT on legal video-sharing sites like YouTube. I do justice to bands. I like their **** I buy it. I don't I delete it. As for movies I don't rent crap so I'll DL a movie that isn't in theaters. If I like it I buy it, if I don't I delete it. Same goes for games too. Like Thief 3, I didn't like it so I didn't get it. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis I loved so I got it for Gamecube.

Well. Let's look at it this way.
While the Turtles are not the smash hit we would like. It did get an overall good review from the audience. Far more people who like the movie than didn't.
Some people may feel embarrased about watching this in public, so will wait for the dvd. Some people still haven't even heard of the movie. At my work, only three people out 150 workers saw the movie. The three who saw it, all loved it and went to see it multiple times. The rest of my co-workers simply don't know it exists. (So people who say that advertising of this movie was just fine. Well, it wasn't fine. It wouldn't kill WB to get the celebrity stars to go on talk shows and strike up interest in the show. When I went to see this movie last Saturday, a man behind me kept on saying 'Where did I hear that voice before?" Everytime Max Winters came on. I turned around and told him it was Patrick Stewart. The man looked absoltutely flaberghasted.
But, to look on the bright side. Punisher barely made back it's production cost. TMNT made twice. And Punisher is still getting a sequel.
Also, I would assume, that the next TMNT could be cheaper. The design is out of the way. All they have to do is now come up with a really good script, but the Turtles are such an adaptable subject, I cant see it being that difficult.
I would think it would be a wise move for Warner Bros to say ok to a sequel. The Turtles didn't tank. And it is a strong possibility for repeat success.
My question now is, what has the rating been for the 2k3 series on Fox. Have they gone up, gone down or stay the same?

I saw a bootleg copy too, but I'm going to wait on the official. Don't get me wrong, I would buy it anyway (of course, duh), but I just think I'll enjoy the official DVD more if I wait for the release because I've seen it in theaters three times now.
Seriously, it did pretty good. I wouldn't worry. Hell, it beat 300 in it's first week, and it maintained a good run it's whole theatrical shelf life. I just saw it again tonight because this is the last night it is playing, and I love seeing the boys "done right" on the big screen. Don't worry. Kevin Monroe wants to do a sequel, Warner Bros got a lot of money, fans loved it (it's in my personal top 10) and the budget costs were reasonable. TMNT looks like it will have a nice long life in theaters. You've just got to realize that it is never going to be a Spiderman level behemoth. More like a Hellboy-level monster.
Here's looking forward to the sequel to the movie that made me fall in love with the TMNT again.

Well, there is good news to all of this, especially in regards to a sequel.
Because it is computer animation, most of the modeling is already done. That's the beauty of Computer animation, it's so easy to turn around and go nuts with the sequels because the hard parts done. They've got a cast, though they might have to recast some of the parts unless they have some of the big name actors (Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ziyi Zhang, Chris Evans) under contract to return. Obviously they'll have to recast Splinter. I hope they can get the Turtles back because all of those guys were excellent.
And really, TMNT didn't do that bad. It's not a blockbuster, but WB didn't really market it that well anyway, and I think it surprised people that it took the number one spot at the box office its opening weekend. I think a lot of people had the impression that it's been done in the past, it had its hey day and now they are looking for new and fresh ideas.
Screw the critics, this is a fan movie and it appeals very much to the fans (I haven't met any turtle fans who have seen it and didn't like it). There is talk of getting Shredder to make an appearance in a proposed sequel, or at least it was hinted at by Karai. There is a chance to continue to make a profit off of this movie if they want to franchise it as a computer animated series. I totally think its doable. Hopefully WB agrees.

Doesn't look like it to me, seeing as it's stopped playing in most places. However --
You've just got to realize that it is never going to be a Spiderman level behemoth. More like a Hellboy-level monster.
 That's a decent comparison of the kind of "hit" TMNT was. While not everyone went to see it, it was great for its target audience: mild to hardcore fans or those who just wanted to see it for the nostalgia... and then there were plenty of people I knew (mostly foreign students who had never grown up with TMNT) who, out of curiousity, saw the movie. And they loved it. :D

I'm pretty confident we'll see a sequel.
I mean, Fantastic 4 got mediocre reviews, it cost 100 mil to make and domestically it only made 154 million, and it's getting a sequel.
TMNT essentially did better than it, so I see no reason why Warner Bros wouldn't greenlight a sequel.
Like Risawn said, all the hardwork is done. They have a cast, they have a director, I'm pretty sure they can get Peter Laird's blessing.
So theres still hope.

I don't see what all the "I'm so worried if it will get a sequel" stuff is all about. The movie is VERY young. It's not even on DVD yet, and it more than doubled it's production costs in profits by a healthy margin. Don't worry about it. It did great.

I am very, very confident the DVD sales WILL do better than the theaters. If so a sequel is only logical. I just hope its not direct to video. The production quality is never as good. Lol I think a lot of us like to pretend turtles 3 never happened. I think if a sequel happens and they keep Munroe and the cast, the sequel should do pretty well especially if the villian is goint to be Shredder. I still kind of wish the series would be more like a trilogy. The first film brings the turtles back together, the second would end with Shredder coming back to life somehow and the third would be the final face off. But I may be a little to greedy there. If we get a sequel it'll be great!

WB needs to look out the whole picture before not deciding to greenlight a sequel. Sure, the Box Office numbers were not as good as they wanted but it did make quite a bit of money. Especially considering it wasn't as expensive as other movies could be. Secondly, they can't ignore international numbers either. I'm sure this film will clean up mighty well overseas. So that should be taken into account. Finally, DVD sales are very, very good. That's nearly pure profit for the studio. I imagine the TMNT DVD will be out this summer. Most likely in July. And it should sell very well. So no worries on that one. All in all, WB has to greenlight a movie. TMNT has been and will be a hit.

It's great that everyone wants a sequel so much - and I want one as much as anyone - anything that involves this incarnation should just go on and on as in my opinion it is the best turtle version ever, best design, best character depictions, best voices etc, but by focusing on the prospect of the sequel, we'll all end up not being able to enjoy the current film for what it is. So I've decided to stop worrying about whether or not we'll get a sequel, try and squeeze another viewing in and look forward to the dvd. This film has not lived its life yet - I'm not going to look too far in the future and end up missing the full enjoyment of this.

Quite right. Factor in the marketing and distribution side of things, plus Laird's cut in profits, the financiers are just barely making a bit of profit after breaking even.
Financiers and licensees -- theatrically -- will only bank on a sequel making roughly half of what its predecessor made. To bank on a sequel to TMNT making half of what it's made, which is just a "Twee" bit of profit, is a fool's gambit.
But we'll see what happens with the DVD. There may be a small chance for direct-to-DVD sequels.

Apparently the toys and videogames have sold well, at least.
But ah well, I guess today's kids just don't care about TMNT. And a lot of the old toon fans didn't bother watching the movie either. Factor them out of the equation, and its mostly either casual fans, hardcore fans or comic book geeks who saw the movie.
Guys please understand something.
It isn't that people this day and age (kids,) don't care about TMNT, you forget the competition and hecticness of the two weeks in which TMNT released.
One Will Ferrell movie
One Disney movie (everyones a puppet for disney animated movies)
One thriller aimed at adults
One movie which had lots of good buzz and kept up good business
Take those factors into account. 300 was still making money, TMNT was released within a week of a new disney film, and the main fact that WB put this movie out at the wrong time.
Had WB released this movie in the second week of april, it would've probably done better, for two weeks until SM3 came out, going up against the likes of Disturbia (which isn't a franchise,) and a flopping Grindhouse (even though the movie rocked.)
The DVD will sell very well, I myself am picking up two copies on day 1. That's just me. Plus I don't think you guys see the point I keep stating, that if a Weinstein says something is going to happen (in this case they said, "its sequel time dudes,) then we have to believe it's truth. They said they were going to split Grindhouse, and they certainly did. You don't understand the power of the Weinsteins in Hollywood. There will be a sequel. If Pitch Black sold well enough but tanked at the B.O. to give us Chronicles of Riddick you can bet your ass were getting a TMNT2.

Gee, you know what Laird's cut is? The cost of marketing and distribution? Why don't you give us all the numbers, we are dying with anticipation here!
Okay, I know you are talking out of your butt, so no need to make up some lie about your uncle having exclusive inside knowledge or whatever. Fact is, plenty of movies with a worse budget-to-worldwide revenue ratio or that just plain grossed less overall have received or will receive sequels. Movies such as:
Hellboy.
The Punisher.
Ghost Rider.
Pitch Black.
Darkman. (Yes, even taking inflation into account)
Tomb Raider.
Also, these movies generally had much greater marketing costs associated with their release. Tell me, how is Punisher getting a sequel when it only grossed 54 mil worldwide and had the same budget as TMNT? How is Hellboy, with a budget of 66 mil and a worldwide take of 112 mil? Gee, that is only 50 mil more than the budget of the film, same as TMNT. Most theaters take about 50% (give or take) of ticket revenue, so Hellboy really only brought back (just a guess based on general industry practices) 56 mil. Yet there will be a sequel next year.
TMNT has DEFINITELY been a significantly profitable undertaking: 1.1 million copies of the licensed game sold, the huge toy and other merchandise sales, a DVD yet to be released, and a worldwide gross 2.5 times the budget (and some markets are still missing from Box Office Mojo's foreign report).
By the way, if the movie had been distributed by the Weinsteins, it would have been their second highest grossing theatrical release EVER, after Scary Movie 4.
To post with artificial certainty is a fool's gambit. In conclusion, Quite Wrong.

I'm thinking we're gonna get a sequel and I'm thinking the Shredder's going to be involved. If that's what happens I'm pretty sure the sequel will be getting more of a profit than this movie did.
For every fan that was going to go see it, there was a couple of chumps who didn't realize that the TMNT was a bit more complex than roughing up the Shredder and his goons. If we go back to basics (something I don't mind, really) then a sequel will swim in cash.

I hear that! The Weinsteins don't need Warner to be involved. If it was Warner digging their heels in about the £100 mill domestic figure, they'll lose the gig. So long as Imagi and the turtles VAs and hopefully Kevin are involved there is a good chance of a great sequel.
I agree that the DVD will sell well - most of my friends who saw the turtles in their prime in the 80s and 90s have confessed to being sorry not to have watched it now and that they will be getting the DVD.

35 million dollar production budget. Factor everything that has gone into marketing, distribution, and the fact that neither WB or Imagi own the rights to TMNT (Laird is pocketing a good %)... 80 million is a far cry from a success.
No chance in hell of a sequel, theatrically. A movie needs to break at least 80 million domestically for a sequel to even be a consideration, as sequels are expected to earn only half of what an original earns by financiers. And even today, to make a film that earns 100 million isn't even considered a "hit" anymore.
May get Munroe's "TMNT 2: The Nonsense Return of Shredder"... but it'll be going straight to DVD folks, and that's if we're lucky.
Sounds more like an ignoramus speaking out of his butt, and with conviction. I already made a post indicating that his ironclad evaluation of the films success was BS, but being the enterprising fellow he is he managed to make another assumption in this same thread that demonstrated the degree
to which he does not know what he is talking about. He is OVER 100 MILLION DOLLARS off of his rough idea for Spider-Man 3's marketing budget, rough figures of which have already been released publically, yet he KNOWS that TMNT wasn't that profitable despite no figures other than the
production budget and WW gross being available to the public?
To speak with Andrews voice: There may be a chance he was only casually uttering nonsense on the basis of knowledge he did not have. There is no way in hell he wasn't doing so. But I hope I didn't come off too strong, I was just using Andrew's method of guessing after all.
He also has repeatedly misquoted Kevin Munroe and mocked him for this falsified quote in the Ideas for a Sequel and Thoughts On The New Movie! threads. In both instances he utilized said "quote" to make digs at Kevin Munroe.
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=19981&page=3
Maybe the improbable occurred and it was a mistake; nevertheless, I pointed out that his "quote" was completely false, and no retraction or apology from Andrew.

When did I ask anyone to judge MY cedibility? READ and decide on the basis of that. Its not like I didn't make ample use of the QUOTE function.
If the simple harshness of the judgement was what bothered you, well, at least it was based on written, cited FACT, i.e. what I quoted. That is more than can be said for anything posted by my supposed "ironic" counterpart.
If you can validate this supposed irony and show how I have been dishonest or inaccurate without concession or apology, I will apologize.
If you can't, you're lame for suggesting as much.
That is all.
Irony has nothing to do with dishonesty. Or counterparts (wth?). Basically, the irony would be in grandly objecting to a "grand predisposition for obnoxiousness" while using the words "grand predisposition for obnoxiousness." *shrug*
Dude, this is a messageboard... you ask people to judge your credibility when you make ANY claim here. That includes claims about other peoples' claims.
FYI: talking about someone's girlfriend, imaginary or no, is very personal. :p I feel like I'm getting close to Mod territory now, so I'll shut up.

The 53mil in the U.S. is good, but why did TMNT only do 29 mil in foreign countries?
Considering how many countries it opened in, to have it do so low is abysmal.
Is TMNT still popular outside the U.S.?

In the UK I only knew about it because I accidently stumbled across the trailer on the internet. No advertising and very few of my pals knew about it. Never once saw the film in a full theatre either. So... in the UK I think people still like TMNT just the advertising didn't reach enough people.

Just from browsing through other movies on Box Office Mojo, it seems fairly typical to have 2/3 of the total intake come from the US, with the other 1/3 being international. I seem to remember reading something along those lines on Box Office Prophets, too. I'll edit in that link when I can find it.
Here it is:
http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/column/index.cfm?columnID=8359
Our insider reveals that “…the studio strategic planners who do the P&Ls on each feature produced assume that each movie's total revenue will be 1.5 times the domestic BO. That's the number they use themselves to forecast lifetime revenue.”
Without re-reading the whole article, I'm not sure if "total revenue" means worldwide box office revenue, or if it includes DVD sales, etc.

You're still not getting it. I'm not interested in forcing the point on you forever. You were being accused of 'overkill' which isn't even close to 'dishonesty'. I've never used my ignore list before because I believe anyone deserves a chance to be heard. But, newbies who come in here spouting hatred like this make me want to change that policy. There are rules stating that arguments and personal attacks are to be relegated to Private Messages. If you want to ignore that, watch how long the mods are going to put up with it. And, assuming you don't want your credibility validated, you're off to a great start in making that a reality. You're making yourself look like a jerk, and no one cares to listen to that. Now, if you want to correct thoughtless posts, do so. But, put the fangs away.

Much more limited release overseas. Factor that in with even weaker advertising and you get 29 mil. :ohwell: TMNT is still very focused on pizza and cowabunga in other countries. So, they have fond memories of the classic 'toon if nothing else.

Don't we want to stop this silly little argument before someone gets hurt? And seeing as I'm a mod in this section, this wasn't a friendly suggestion. So, folks, just drop it and walk away.

Im pretty sure that the DVD sales will be very good... I think the PG rating and that the movie is CGI hurt the box office numbers alot

I do not think that the CGI truly hurt the movie. The other 3 movies were PG. This movie was borderline PG-13. Alot of fans are so used to live-action movies. The advertising is what hurt the movie. DVD sales will be very good. Alot of people would rather rent or own a movie then watch it in a movie theater.

Yeah... as has been said, this movie is going to make its killing on DVD. Not very many people will want to admittedly come out and watch a TMNT movie. What you're going to get are people waiting in line to buy the movie or renting it. Me... I specifically put it in my Blockbuster Queue even though I'm going to buy it. Why? Hell - Might as well help the rentals as well, right?
Also - as for the Widescreen/Fullscreen debate... Leave it at one or the other. There's no need to purchase both. Widescreen is the best choice. (Yes, I know this is in a different thread.)

So let's face it TMNT isn't going to make much more money and here's the total
$53.3M
Now I don't think that's worldwide but that's pretty low. Chances of a sequel are pretty slim but we can hope. If anything it all depends on DVD sales now.

I thought we had been told that DVD sales didn't count in the sceme of things? :ohwell: :|

They don't but if they get solid DVD sales then it could mean a direct to DVD release.

I`d bet if DVD sales are high enough...we could see another TMNT

Production Budget: $34 million
Domestic: $53,273,619
+ Foreign: $29,723,673
= Worldwide: $82,997,292
Doesn't sound like a bomb to me (unless they spent $40-50 million on marketing)

Why is everyone so negative? :P
A bomb would be Grindhouse.... it has barely made back half of its total production cost.
Cost: $67 million
Has made: $24,283,797 Domestic
Turtles is by no means a blockbuster, but it is a modest success.
I don't know if there is going to be another film, I am not even going to guess.
I am just tired of good amount of people on here calling the film a "bomb" a "failure" and such nonsense. No one was expecting Spiderman like numbers out of this film.

That's pretty much just saying it bombed...but nicer. That's "Hulk" money there, and IT'S sequel is going to be a flipping reboot.
C'mon people, no need to sugercoat failiure, TMNT is'nt as big as it used to be, even presently.
