The movie was by no means breaking any box office record or anything

and that's all they were really looking for.

Nonsense. They said they wanted 100 million domestically and it performed at half-mast. Even worldwide, it's performed even under what they wanted domestically.

Did fine for a one shot affair, but a sequel would be a losing gambit by any financier's eyes. Unless DVD sales go out and reinvent the wheel.

xmen510
07-20-2007, 09:13 AM
It may not have done as well as they had hoped, but compared to a lot of other movies that have not recouped their losses in theatre, it has almost Tripled the cost which, I believe, is about $15 million in profit for the studio. I believe it is around a 50/50 split with the Theatres and Studios. It might be up to 60/40 but I doubt it is that high.

DVD Sales actually are intregal to wheather or not many movies actually get a sequel or not. Many movies to great in theatre but have extremely lacking DVD sales so Studios will not invest in a sequel. Also many times, a movie has not recouped all of the money back in theatre but has done well enough on DVD to warrant a sequel to be made (the new Superman movie being one of them).

Also, as I usually do when I post in this thread, Another update.:D

Current total: $92,965,490.

Dudes, this is getting real old. Almost every single day someone has to argue about whether they think a sequel is at hand or not, aren't you starting to get tired of this?

xmen510

All right ToTheNines. You win. I won't argue any more about sequals in this thread.:D Some people are just sooo pessimistic. Oh well.

Also, I think that I must point out that I am neither a "Fop" nor a "Brainless Dandy". I am also not an Easterner who vacations on a ranch!:P

Now that I have been quite Literal about my objection to being called a "Dude", I must in all actuallity confess that I really don't mind.:D

I know the Weinsteins are gonna want to go for it. TMNT was like their only hit so far in 2007, other than 300. With all the money they spent advertising for Grindhouse, that STILL flopped. So TMNT is the closest thing they have to a blockbuster that they can make a sequel of. Frank Miller wouldn't let them do a sequel to 300, I don't think, so unless the Weinsteins don't like making money, odds are pretty good that anotherTMNT is gonna happen.

Well I still hope there is more to come from the Box Office receipts. A bit of bad news to report though. BoxOfficeMojo has lowered the total based on their estimates being a little too high for Foreign Box Office Receipts. The Total now stands at $92,963,332. Hopefully more to come.

The Total Box Office take is now at: $93,001,086.

Unless is gets revised down or up, I don't see too many more updates. It is all up to the DVD's now. It was nice to see it break the $93M mark though.:D

I know this disc is going to do well, but it would be nice to see how well it does and be able to compare the ammount to how much it made at the box office.

I wish I did know of DVD sales figures sites. i was thinking of starting a thread to ask for this myself. The only site I know that occasionaly gives a little info on this topic is again boxofficemojo. Hopefully someone here might know of a site that tracks this kind of information so we can keep up with the DVD end of the spectrum.

Hungary and Poland are not even on the list at BoxOfficeMojo. I personally trust their information one heck of a lot more than IMDb. IMDb's info is quite often inaccurate at best and complete bull**** at worst. Just about anybody can post there. It just can't be trusted in my opinion. Perhaps it will open in Hungary and Poland though. One can hope after all. I've just been let down a million times too many by that site. I don't even go there for information any more at all. DVD Sales Total: $16,548,637.

Yay! Good news, indeed!

And according to MY figures, these two (current) totals altogether equal:

The GRAND total of

$110,033,786!

And I'm sure that the DVD sales AREN'T over yet. Which means (at the risk of stating the painfully obvious here) that there MAY be a BIGGER grand total later on before it's all over.

And this may be a bit OT, but what about cable and satelitte Pay-Per-View revenues? Does Warners and Co. get the proceeds off of those? I know that I spent about $20.00 (which was SUPPOSEDLY just supposed to be $3.99 for an all day run of the movie on DishNetwork Pay-per-view) on THAT myself last month! So I hope that THAT goes in on the total revenues for the movie.

True. Because it's entirely free to print, package, and distribute the DVDs to stores. And because the marketing/television spots/distribution of the film and DVD is free as well.

They'd be foolish to not go back and make a sequel to a film with only modest returns when they can devote the same resources to original films -- with rights that they own -- that stand to earn 100% profit, particularly in a motion picture business where a sequel is expected to earn only half of its predecessor's gross.

They must be crazy not to greenlight TMNT 5.

Well if you knew anything about the film industry you'd know people would rather go see a sequel then a originial movie so yeah they would be stupid not to green light another movie. The money these toys are raking in is enough to cover any of that I'm sure. I don't know about your area but they always sold out quick by me, and they get shipments often from what I can tell.

Just because you have a personal vendetta against anything non-Mirage related doesn't mean they shouldn't make another movie. There's still the other 95% of TMNT fans who enjoyed this movie and from what we've seen from websites and such alot of other people enjoyed it as well*Wasn't TMNT voted one of the best comic adapt films on one site?*

You don't want a sequel because you didn't like this one, you don't take into consideration a sequel could be better and the way I view it your being rather selfish. You act as if a sequel hurts you in some way. When in reality no one twisted your arm to see this new movie and no one will do so when another comes out. Not wanting a sequel that will make the rest of the TMNT population happy is, like I said, rather selfish.

I know this is very difficult guys but we really should try to ignore his crap. Not taking my own advice here but, you did know that it only costs about $1.50 - $3.00 to print, package and record a movie on DVD right? It is extremely cheep. About 80-90 percent of a DVD's cost is profit. That is why sequels can be made when the movie itself does not perform to expectations in theatre. Not performing is not an issue here though since it's profit in theatre was more than equal to cost. They made more than 30 million in profit from theatre alone. Please stop whining and ranting and either give logical and concise arguments or shut up.

Andrew NDB
09-11-2007, 11:02 AM
No, you guys are absolutely correct. It's foolish of me to think that all of the DVD sales are not pure profit. What I also didn't realize (which isn't surprising, since as you know I don't know anything about the film industry) is that stores that sell DVDs actually work as a charity for the movie production studios -- see, I had no idea Fred Meyer/Wal-Mart/Fry's/etc. give all of their sales from the DVDs on their shelves to Warner Bros..

Awful nice of them, isn't it? It's just crazy if no one greenlights TMNT #5 with factoids like this one. Damn it, I want to see more monsters and ghosts and stuff.

Stores buy the DVDs for 15 dollars a piece and mark the price up to 20. Even if the DVD doesn't sell well the fact that the store bought them already makes no difference. The company doesn't get money when a retailer sells a copy of the movie they get money when the retailer BUYS the movie to sell in their store. No matter what they profit.

I don't know how much you know but alot of things in stores make no profit for the store itself IE Ipods, game consoles, and most DVDs. Their just there so they can be used as a selling point for accessories that are marked way up. 360 controllers are only worth about 10 bucks and their marked up to 30. DVD players are totally inflated and HDTVs as well.

xmen510
09-11-2007, 11:20 AM
Quite correct Spitfire. THe stores themselves do not actually make a huge profit off of DVD's. Yes, they do make one, but only about 25% of the DVD price is for them, if that.

Also, a reminder to those keeping an eye on this thread. The DVD figures are for US SALES ONLY. It does not count the sales (and thus profits made) from foreign markets. With this information, we know that TMNT had made even more money than what we have been posting and discussing here.

Wait a minute...so TMNT was a flop? I thought for sure hearing it was number one at the box office at one point, and it seems to be bringing in a decent amount of money. I think a sequel would make sense, especially if they were planning on bringing back Shredder, something that people nostalgic for the turtles would love. Animated movies are really popular in the first place.

Mr. Murphy said that Imagi is ready and willing, but they want a better distribution deal with WB this time around. They're meeting with Mirage again in a month to report on the progress.

I would think with WB and Weinsteins handling "Gatchaman" and "Astroboy", something will be worked out. I just wish that Kevin Munroe can be involved.

Isn't Gatchaman the same thing as Battle of the Planets? I always thought the name was kind of funny, because before you see it written down you kind of assume that it's "Gotcha Man" or something.

Or maybe they can make a movie called "Gotch Man":

Still making money-- so cool!

Does anyone know what they make when it's available on VOD? Like do they get a few cents per showing?

That's all in DVD sales alone? Not bad. I see the DVD all over so I assume kids like it.

I told K. M. that "Gatchaman" sounded like a 70s "blacksploitation" film--

Anyway, I used to like "Astroboy" when I was VERY young (back in the 60s).
'Gatchaman' comes from the metallic "ga-chan!" sound of two giant robots clashing.

No joke.

For those who are interested.

Latest information I could find. Just thought I'd let people know.

Box Office: $94,999,681 (Revised Total as off last report given by studio. Not necessarily final Box Office Total).

DVD Sales: $31,061,738 (Final DVD total found as of September 30, 2007. Obviously not the final total either).

Total: $126,061,419 (Not actual current total. Just last reports calculated that were found).

The DVD info is obviously 5 months off, so we can safely assume that Total take thus far is over 130 Million Dollars. This is good. It means that the movie was profitable in Theatre and even DVD sales alone could probably finance another movie. Profit wise, there really is no reason why a sequal could not happen. Hopefully by April we will have our answer and another movie will be made. My hope is for a live action one, done in the same style and tone of the 1st movie, but that is just my hopes.
