The all new super-charged computer-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Warner Bros) is off to an explosive start at the box office with a staggering $9.7 million on opening day, and as much as an estimated $34.5 million for its opening 3-day weekend. TMNT will coast to an easy weekend win battling past 5 other new films entering the marketplace, along with the third weekend for 300 (Warner Bros). My studio sources are telling me that the Ninja Turtles had a huge matinee turnout, then Under 25’s kept theatres packed for evening shows.

Wow. This is exilirating to see the Turtles out on number one, thus far. I was worried that The Hills Have Eyes would be number one, because the theater I went to, had the Turtles in a tiny theater, while I saw THHE playing in the monster sized theater.

It's great to see our beloved boys in green still got it.:)

The only really posistive I can see from the short running time is it gives the movie a chance to have more screenings.

At my theater Turtles had at least 2 more show times then any of the other films, even 300.

Looks like at least a $30 million opening. Most likey, it'll take a 50% drop the weekend after. Putting it at at least $45 million. If I'm not mistaken, would put it just over the budget for the film. I'm sure the numbers worldwide will be good as well. Plus, the positive word of mouth from the viewing public. (Not the critics. Screw the critics.) I really think a sequel is going to happen. *knock on wood*

Not all the professional critics have been negative, although nearly all of them are hesitant to praise, because of the pop culture history of TMNT.

The Washington Post review gave it 3 stars and made it a top pick.

A drop of 50% ? I dunno.. I wouldn't be surprised to see tmnt have a $50-55 million box office next week. After that, things are gonna slow down alot, but I do think that It will have 2 strong weeks at the BO.

It's not hard to see why this movie is done well.

Two decades worth of people have become fans of the turtles, old series and new. While a lot of the newer generation visits because "hey I watch that Saturday mornings!!!"... I (we) old-school fans visit in hopes to see the movie we never got.

Combined with the fact the movie was actually good, (I'll admit - to my surprise), factors in the replay value big time.

I'm going to see it again tonight. I went with my younger friends last night. Tonight, I'm going with my mom and aunt, and some of their friends. I think a cousin might join us too. But alot of people are hyped about this movie.

I just hope next time, PG-13 material, more substance (not so rushed) and I'd like to see this excellent CGI in an IMAX version!:D

All the showings were sold out last night. I watched it at 12:10 AM, and we got in the theater at around 11:55 AM, thinking it would be empty, but we were wrong. Packed, it was. We had to split our group up. There were people sitting along the aisles.

I only spotted two kids in the audience (well, it WAS past midnight), but everyone else looked 20 years old and above.

Warhorse
03-24-2007, 11:44 AM
Same thing happened in my theate mundial. There were people sitting on the steps to watch the film, and they had two, count them, two screen going on at the same time. And this was at the 10:30pm showing. I dunno if this is a good thing or not, it's been a while since I've been to the theaters, but the buzz were the Turtles, despite the theater thinking that the Hills Have Eyes would be the shiznit this weekend. Boy were they wrong. And I'm glad of it.

Hey, with 300 and TMNT supposedly taking the two top spots this weekend, seems CGI is really finding it's niche in the world. And so many people were hating on the Turtles for being CGI, would even check the movie out. Fools.

Thought i read on the monroe thread about him thinking sequel at 100 m. and were at 34.5. That means at nine dollars a ticket we need roughly 7.3 million more people to go see this thing before it leaves theaters. I love the movie but i cant see it that many more times.

I've been thinking about that 100 mil thing. Is he sure that's really what they want to greenlight a sequel, of have they since come to their senses and opted for 50 mil instead. Because even at 50 mil, Warner Bros will still be getting they're investment back and more.

TMNT Opens with $8.7 Million
Source: ShowbizData
March 24, 2007

The Warner Bros. animated feature film TMNT grossed an estimated $8.7 million its opening day according to ShowbizData, averaging $$2,798 in 3,110 theatres. That points to a weekend take somewhere between $25 and 27 million, roughly where the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live action movie opened back in 1990.

Also yesterday, Zack Snyder's historic epic 300 added an additional $6 million to its box office take going into its third weekend, where it's likely to cross the $150 million mark after 15 days.

Check back tomorrow on ComingSoon.net for the full box office report.

I wonder what the figures are in other parts of the world. I may have to go see the movie again if it helps put the figures up. Even if the movie doesnt make $100m in theatres, I can assure you DVD sales will help out.

Take Fantastic Four for example. The only reason that got a sequel was because the DVD sales were so high. If we have an HD DVD or BluRay release then TMNT would be on a lot of peoples 'to buy' lists.

I'm so sick of seeing all the MTR's commercials on TV. The movie looks really dumb too. I find Pixar's movies very overrated. Then again, I only saw Toy Story 1 and 2, and I really hated the first Toy Story.

Come now. I see barely any similarities between Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Even if they did have the same plot, the setting and characters are so dratically different that they seem wholly original ... if you want reused plots with different species, look to Disney (yes, I know Disney owns Pixar, but the Disney writers are not the Pixar writers).

As if this TMNT movie didn't reuse billions of elements of other movies.

From the look of things it will be in the 25-30 mil range for its opening weekend. That's pretty good. The true test though will be if it can put up similar numbers NEXT weekend. Word of mouth and repeat viewings will be the key if it is to have a chance to do $100 mil.

I'd like to hope so, I know DVD sales make them alot of cash because DVDs cost about 5 bucks to make and they sell them for 15-20. Like Blu-ray the disks themselves cost 25 bucks to buy but the movies are like 40.

Wait, what? Where did you hear this? From what I've seen/read he seems very enthusiastic about the movie and the Turtles in general, so if what you're saying is true... well, then it'd be more than a little surprising.

Here's a bit on a potential sequel from a very recent interview at Cinematical.com (http://www.cinematical.com/2007/03/23/interview-tmnt-director-kevin-munroe/):

Cinematical: Assuming TMNT does really well, what about the sequel? Are you interested in that? Are there already plans for one?

KM: Yeah, ya know I can't lie and say that we've never spoken about it. I've got a deal to write it, and -- I don't know -- we'll see. I think it will be largely dependent on this weekend, and then overall domestic gross. But I think there are a lot more stories to tell with this universe. I think there are a lot more places to go. And a lot more characters to flesh out.
It may not be a done deal, but he says he's attached to write it at least and he seems interested. Here's hoping.

I was watching Fox News this morning (okay, earlier this afternoon) before I Came to the library to make some print-outs (STILL don't have ink in my printer at home yet, drat it! Ah, well.....), and saw (and taped) a bit on the movie that they ran there. On the little "crawler" thing that goes across the bottom of the screen, it said that TMNT made 25.45 million on its debut weekend, and THEN when the s"tory" came on (short though it was), they said that it made WELL OVER 30 million on its opening weekend. So I'm thinking sequel. Definitely.

And here's hoping that Kevin not only writes it, but directs it, too.

I am LOVIN' this!!! My niece Ashley and I went Friday night to see it, and, like everywhere else that it's been, the Glass Sword Cinema 6 (that's the larger of our two theatres here in town) was PACKED! My brother and other niece went to see "Wild Hogs" (which they said was good), but, from what I could tell, MOST of Friday's ticket sales were for TMNT. The section that it was being shown in was PACKED, to the point that Ash and I wound up sitting in the second row from the front (and it's a good thing that I saved her a seat next to mine, or she would've wound up sitting on Aunt Wolfie's lap, or I would've wound up sitting on the floor NEXT to her!)! And when I looked around a couple of times, I noticed that folks were not only sitting on any available space on the floor, there was standing room only along the walls! And this at $7.00 for an adult admission and $5.00 for kids and seniors!

Not only THAT, when the 7 PM showing was over and we left the theatre building, people we lined up clear to a fence next door to the building, and that was like, oh, 200 or 300 yards AWAY form the front door! And MOST floks that I overheard talking about which of the six movies that they were going to see said, "The Turtles' one" (or a variation of that). Which is good.

Also, ANY non-R-rated movie (like TMNT) usually winds up going to our OTHER theatre here (it's called "Family Theatre, hence their "no R-rated movies" rule) about a month (or thereabouts) AFTER it finishes its runs at the Glass Sword. (They go STRAIGHT to it, actually.) So, as you can guess, Ash and I ALREADY have another TMNT movie-watchin' date. And even better, the ticket price in better. Just $4.00 for an adult ticket (don't know WHAT a kid's ticket runs, but I'll find out soon enough.). so I figure that, once itgets there, they might make a bit more money for it.

And I am DEFINITELY getting the DVD when it's released. I think between Mirage, 4Kids, Funimation, LionsGate and Warner Bros., my wallet is going to be in terminally EMPTY mode for some time to come.

And Speaking of the DVD, I hope the release date IS July 10th. It's my bro's birthday (I told him that, and he playfully rolled his eyes, grinned at me, and said, "Yippeee. ), and the 7th (which I wouldn't usually care about a TMNT DVD release date) is the date that my much-beloved Aunt Floss passed away last year. Still, SHE would want me to get it, as it would make a sad day kinda happy for me. So, while I'lll be getting it anyway, I'll do it in her memory.

Now, if my darned Wal-Mart will just cooperate, and get it in on the RELEASE date, and NOT when THEY want to. HATE that!!!

Great news!

It's also worth noting that TMNT's opening weekend did pretty much exactly as well as the first movie in 1990. Here's (http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/month/?mo=03&p=.htm) a list of the all-time top March openings - they're only about $50,000 apart. The 1990 movie went on to make $135 million domestic. So if TMNT has the same legs in the long run, we should be seeing our sequel.

Take this as a spoiler or not, but when asked if the film sets up a sequel at the end, Munroe replied:

“Yea, a sequel big time. It's a very not-so-subtle nod at the end.

I'd love it to happen, I wish it was my decision. I do have a deal to do a second one, we'll just wait and see if it happens. I think it's going to depend, it's just all box office at this point.”

TMNT reviews/stories are currently on the front page of Google News in the entertainment section. Most of the stories are from the AP coverage of TMNT being number 1.

This is a good thing. :D

From "Weekend Box Office Gets Turtle Power!" by Stephanie Sanchez 3/25/07, quoting Reuters:
The Time Warner Inc. -owned studio had expected the $30 million film -- one of six new entries -- to open in the mid-teen millions. The audience was split fairly evenly among children and nostalgic adults, and exit polls were favorable, it said.

"TMNT" is the fourth entry in the crime-fighting franchise; the previous one, the live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III," opened at No. 1 in 1991 with $12.4 million. (Back then, the average ticket price was $4.21; last year, it was $6.55, according to the Motion Picture Assn. of America.)

Warner Bros., a 50/50 partner on "TMNT" with international distributor Weinstein Co., also released "300," which slipped to No. 2 with $20.5 million. The total for the blood-soaked Spartan saga rose to $162.4 million after three weeks.

So... the movie opened at least 7 mil more than WB expected.

300 is a beast of a movie. Warner Bros must be dancing with joy with how insane amount of money is still making at the box office. Realistically, I don't see TMNT beating out 300 because its got killer promo and strong reviews. Both movie is under Warner Bros so its win-win situation on which of these movies come at top. Its just too bad that TMNT came out when there is stiff competion on its release.

True, but 300 has been out for a long time.

Honestly, I'm just annoyed 'cuz I don't like 300. :)

300 is too much like Titanic for MY tastes. When I go to see a movie, I want to be surprised at the end, and a lot of the way through. The events in 300 are historical, for the most part, and the ending of IT, like Titanic, isn't a real big surprise. The Titanic sank with a horrendous loss of life, and the Spartans got slaughtered by the Persians at Thermopolea (sp?); BIG surprise there, on BOTH counts.

I like historical stuff, yeah, but IF I want to watch something like THAT, I'll watch a documentary on the History Channel, or something. Doesn't COST as much, you don't have to contend with crowds; etc. And I am NOT gonna pay $7.00 to see something that is technically an overblown documntary on steriods! I like surprises when it comes to movie, thanks much, NOT an over-priced history lesson!

Not being snotty here, just truthful. Ergo, I think that I'll stick with movies like TMNT (which I AM gonna go see again, incidently. My family will probably think I'm nuts, but I'm the adult TMNT fanantic in my clan. So sue me!;) :P )).

On a side note, it great to see TMNT made more money on its first day than Meet the Robinsons.

There is no way that is right. The foreign takings has to be higher than that. Heck I accounted for nearly $80 of that figure.

$29.3 domestic... something like 33-34 mil worldwide, but I believe the foreign figures from boxofficemojo are only from before monday (opening weekend), so it should be a bit higher than 34 mil as of thursday, worldwide.

edit: Ok, Foreign Total as of Mar. 25, 2007: $4,526,481... Domestic Total as of Mar. 29, 2007: $29,268,284... there you go.

Whatever the weekend grosses may be, I sure hope TMNT has a long lifespan in theatres. Maybe it won't be the fastest-selling movie out there, but perhaps it'll enjoy a nice longevity that'll push its worldwide gross into the high millions.

Both movies however, took giant liberties with the way the movies get to the ending point that you know about. Which means you know about as much in 300 as you do in TMNT. Just as you knew the Spartans would get slaughtered, you also knew the Turtles were going to win over any villian. How they get there is all the fun.

Ok this is no April fools joke. Here is a link showing how much TMNT made over the weekend.

It did beat out shooter, ended up in 4th place with another 9.1 million.

http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2007&wknd=13&p=.htm

So now it is 3-4 million over its production cost, and reading the interview with Tom Gray, it seems they didn't have to pay for marketing costs, so anything above its production cost is profit. We won't know for sure until monday, it could have a slight chance at making more, or worse, less...

EDIT: They don't show Saturday and Sundays figures just yet, but the total weekend take itself which I directly linked to.

Dude, $9 million isn't what I would call terrible, especially with the strong competition.

I wish it were an April fools joke, but it's not looking like it.

In anycase DVD sales do help make or break franchises. Family Guy DVD's brought the show back to life, never seen that happen before. Same with Futurama getting a set of movies and possibly more air time. Lost was aparently so good it was turned from a mini-series to a full fledged show. Finally Pitch Black DVD sales helped pave the way for The Chronicles of Riddick.

So while its nice that the movie is in the black now, and is all profit from here on out, DVD sales will help fuel the fire.

EDIT: And perhaps WB will make smarter decisions on a release timeframe that isn't so crowded next time. It is part their fault when they could've released it in April to allow two weeks to pass on the films out now, and the big films like POTC:AWE and Spiderman 3.

Most movies around here seem to stick around for a good two months at least. The decent ones anyway. I imagine TMNT sticking around about two months since it hit number 1. Unless of course it dies a horrible death in the next couple weeks which I really hope doesn't happen.

The movie has a an estimated gross of over $43M domestically and world-wide within the first 10 days. It would have been great if it grossed $50M the first weekend and close to $70M by this weekend, but overall, given the competition and the time of year, its done really well. Certainly a lot better than most of the critics would give it credit for.

The $43 mil worldwide, though still an estimate, should actually be much higher than that. The foreign figures are only from Mar. 23-25... so I wouldn't be surprised if TMNT is $50+ mil by Monday when the foreign figures will be updated for Mar. 26-April 1st intake.

"After being heralded as a franchise revival upon its No. 1 debut, TMNT devolved 62 percent to an estimated $9.2 million for $38.4 million in 10 days and, at its current trajectory, will likely be the least-attended of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. " End quote.

Looks like maybe a 50-60 million gross at most...so much for the 100 million I was hoping for (as well as the director and producer). Very disappointing indeed...and next weekend we have Grindhouse which will be big. It's too bad, it's a good film. It deserved better.

It's not like the movie was terrible -- it was at least a B movie. Better than Over the Hedge, for crying out loud. But if you don't see it you won't think about it. Word of mouth can only do so much. Am I supposed to perpetually remind people like a living advertisement?

...

I seem to remember Harvey Weinstein saying something along the lines that they were relying heavily on word of mouth for the success of the movie.

You know what? I blame myself. I could have downloaded the posters for the movie a week or more before TMNT's release and posted them all over campus, just like some army of students did for Blades of Glory. I could have even offered to paint the advertisement for the TMNT movie in the campus tunnel -- whoever they got to make it made the absolutely sh**tiest ad I've ever seen. Picture this, boring white background, barely painted over the previous advertisement so it's semi-translucent and not standing out as much as it could; stupidly placed in a corner where it's easy to miss; the lettering was f***ing horrible with the words smashed so close together you could hardly read it; the turtles looked like retarded baby martians with colored bandanas -- either that or they were butt naked without their plastrons.

I would have given a strong black background located front and center in the underpass, the turtles looking badass and actually in some kind of recognizable turtle pose, the letters would have been made with neons and metallics to stand out against the black... I would draw people into the ad by making it blow their minds, sending the message: "The turtles are back."

I now wish I had joined my school's filmboard at the beginning of the year...:(

It's hard to tell now Rooish. I'm still optimistic. Easter weekend is around the corner, families will be together and will want to go see family oriented movies together and things might pick up.

It's a possibility the toyline is selling like crazy, and maybe the toy companies will push WB into making another movie.

Perhaps the dvd's will be flying off the shelves, like Fantastic Four did.

It's still too soon to really say anything concrete. Could be (in my opinion anyways) is that the franchise is being marketed to the wrong age group. Many people here have mentioned, it was mostly older teens and twenty somethings that were in the theaters. Perhaps if people saw the PG-13 slapped on the movie, it would draw some more interest. Nothing is more appealing than seeing an animated movie aimed more at the adult crowd.

If they really did say 100 mil, then they're probably meaning by the end of box office and DVD sales. Like said previously, many studios get most of their profit from DVD sales and look towards that more, which is why movies are released so much faster now. Its only been out for a little over a week now.

Sure, I wish it did better this week, but its not that bad. Its still gonna be in theaters for a while to. They'll make well over a 100 million in theaters and DVD sales. Plus, merchandise seems to be selling good.

Well, here's a fun fact: our dear friends at Warner Bros didn't expect TMNT to make more than around 14 million last weekend... it exceeded that by over 10 million.

Even this weekend, it's still ahead of the expected curve, with the kind of competition it's facing.

Don't fret, Fledermaus. Your guilt can't top mine! My school's mascot is a freaking TURTLE. They play part of the Old Toon theme song at games, after which the crowd yells, "TURTLE POWER!" :D

Let me put it this way

If films like "Wild Hogs" and "Ghost Rider" could make over a $100 million...then TMNT more than deserved to make that much (or more). Like I said before, and many on here agree, this is a GOOD film. And because a good film like this doesn't make that number, but certain craptacular movies (cough Wild Hogs cough) make that much...it's depressing.

Although it wouldn't be the first time an awesome movie got dismissed (although at least it isn't a bona-fide flop). Anyone remember a little film called "Big Trouble in Little China"? :D

I wouldn't count out a sequel just yet. This was a cheap film to make, so it doesnt have to make alot to break even. I dissagree with this statement. I actually started a thread once, trying to find the gender demographic for this franchise, and it seems to be split even. I remember the old movies, there were just as many girls watching the movies as boys. I give that credit purely to Eastman and Laird for creating a strong female presence in April O' Neil, and later on, when I became familiar with the 2k3 toon, Karai is another very poignant female role model.

Plus, my mom and aunt went to see the Turtles (they had a blast hearing Black Betty play while Raph was getting the snot kicked out of him) and they are old enough to be grandmothers too.

Believe it or not, girls do like action flicks, and hell, a good majority of us have a damned good time at a horror blood fest too!

Perhaps it's a "boy" movie in that parents watch the commercials, see ninjas and martial arts and non-Pokemon-style monsters, and assume, "My little girl won't be interested in that!" So they don't bother introducing it to their daughter/bring their single daughter to watch the movie.

But personally? It wasn't Karai or April that got me interested in the series. It was the turtles. Ninja Turtles (and Transformers, and sentai, and Ultraman, and Swat Kats, and...) can appeal to girls too, and it doesn't necessarily need a strong female presence for that to happen.

First off, I loved this new movie not only as a turtle fan but also as a movie fan of the action genre, and hope that TMNT does well enough in the end to warrant a sequel. In saying that though, I think there are two things that ultimately will lessen the impact and there of the overall financial takings of the new TMNT film. Publicity and Fan Knowledge.
At least here in Oz where I am there was little or no warning of the new TMNT film save for a few posters in the back of the theatre lobby and a few teaser trailers ON THE DAY OF RELEASE. How in the hell are people supposed to have known there was a new TMNT release when there was little prior acknowledgment that there was one being released ? The marketers slaughtered the calf before it even left the stable.
Another reason why I think the new film will not do that well is that, as some have already noted, it is very much a movie made with the assumption that you already know the mythos, the characters and what has happened before this movie has played out. Basically it hits the ground running and does not stop until the end credits has rolled and you are leaving the cinema. But in doing that it also leaves newcomers a bit on the outer and a bit out of whack as to who these guys are and what is unfolding out before us. The Leo/Ralph friction does indeed, on reflection, come so out of left of field unless you know the relationship between the two brothers before hand, not to mention the Don/Mike dynamic.

I believe he did! XD That's why I think it is funny that people think of it of more of a "boy" movie. It was the girls in my huge movie going group that were more happy about the movie as we left the theater. "I'm better than you." *giggles* Ahem...but anyway, I believe the movie will do very well in the future! Give it time. Like someone said, Easter weekend is a huge time for movies! ^_^

Had to post about the girl thing. I disliked April in the early cartoon much like I dislike Lois Lane. The nosy reporter thing gets to me. Or maybe it's the 'The scoop is far more important than my life or other people's lives so I'm going to do something utterly moronic to get it."

If they'd at least try to be smart I think I could take it better. :P

But April in this movie, most of the movies and the comics was good! :D I didn't really watch TMNT for her though.

You are absolutely right! Girls love TMNT - most of the people I know who grew up with it in the 80s but still love it are girls. I think the strong characterisation that TMNT has always exhibited appeals to women. The ninja bit is wicked, too, but I certainly love the turtles for its endearing and complex characters.

As well as being tough, all the turtles have a gentleness to them (even Raph who despite being very aggressive is the most likely be shown having symapthetic moment with a child or an old lady and also often arouses empathy when he is distress) and I think this helps girls relate to the characters.

I got this email back from Dan today.

> Are there retards running Warner Bros? Seriously, how can they > really expect this movie to make 100 million in domestic box office > alone.

I suspect it has something to do with the TMNT being privately owned. As a distributor, WB is going to expect a much larger box office take than for a film they produced and own.

> Even at 60 million they'd be making almost double they're > investment back, I mean they only put 34 million into it.

That's been the problem with getting a TMNT flick made for the past 15 years. The studios don't want to hit doubles - they want grand slams.

> Why do they really think they can get 100 million in domestic box > office alone?

It's probably more an accounting issue than anything else. I don't know if they thought it could do 100 million - but that's the dollar point that makes a sequel fiscally feasible for their bean counters. They were willing to gamble that the movie would become a sleeper hit (like "300" has) - but they're not going to make the same gamble for a sequel. They need to know there's a huge audience for it, because if there's not, they'll move on to the next sleeper-hit gamble.

That's not making me feel any better.

Oh, I know that. I'm talking more little girls though and even grandmas. I'm not saying none are at all, I’m saying they’re more inclined to see the Disney or little animal movies over Ninja Turtles. Obviously. More so now than back in the 90's. I know a lot of girls are into TMNT and back in the day lots were too. The theater I was a, at my showing, was all boys, except for moms who were there with them.

In regards to WB, all I've heard is they have been very impressed with TMNT and didn't expect it to do so good at the box office. I keep hearing mixed stuff here. I dunno. Anyway, I'm anxious to see how the DVD sales are too. That alone has given many movies that were not planned to get sequels, get them. And as many have said, its only been in theaters a little over a week, give it a month at least.

I hope Warner Bros realizes they do have an audience in TMNT. The kids being number one, fortunatley story to them pales in comparison to action. Also, the die-hard fans, along with the comic book fans, the 18-25 demographic who grew up on the turtles, and, if they get the word out again, the MySpace crowd.

The problem is, most of that crowd are waiting for the DVD, probably becasue they're too scared to see it in theatres.

If they do a sequel, they can get a cool 100 million out of it. All they have to do is 2 simple things.

1. Make it PG-13. The PG rating scared some potential viewers off. They could benifit from PG-13. That why they could up the violence, throw out an occasional hell and damn, and let Mikey use his chucks. Also, a tad bit of bloodshed(in the heavy action scenes) might help.

2. Get someone new to edit the trailers. Someone with common sense.

As for old toon April. I can't hardly remember her now. But I think her being in the franchise kind of made it more comfortable for the girls to like the green machine. I presonaly, always liked Raph from the old toon, because he acted just like I did.

But I thought the original movie April was not so bad. She did help knock a foot ninja out with a bo staff in the final fight!;)

But as for horrors, as long as it's not ridiculous (like the Hills Have Eyes, that was a bit retarded for my tastes) are some great pieces of entertainment. Horror movies really bring out all your emotions out.

I hope Warner Bros realizes they do have an audience in TMNT.

Yeah... so how do we get them to realise this? Letters? Emails? I'm in the UK and still meeting people who had no idea the film exists. There has been absolutely zippo marketing here outside of London - the scope is so much vaster than is reflected in the box office numbers.

I don't think it's doing very well in the UK (don't know the figures) as every time I've been (advanced preview, opening night, and a couple of other times) there have been less than 15 people in the cinema.

I know that UK figures will not count to the £100mill target, but seriously, come on...No posters here, no TV trailers... I had to really rummage in a major book store to find the books, and it's not like I live in a remote village - I live in the city. How do they expect it do well if they don't market the bl**dy thing?

In the first week, marketing wasn't too bad in the UK imo. The game was fairly decent advertising to some. I managed to walk into tescos a couple of nights ago to find the graphic novel for £3.73 which was a bargain buy :D

Well there's some good news on the horizon. It seems the foreign box office is starting to come in; current worldwide gross for TMNT has jumped to $50,462,003 according to boxofficemojo.com. So right now the foreign ticket sales are accounting for about 20% of the total box office gross, compared to barely 10% just a few days ago.

No because TMNT is the most unfamily ordinated family film I've ever seen.

Sure it's about a broken family that comes together but other then that it's not really a family/kids flick. They really screwed themselves by making it a kids film. We all know a 13 on the end of it's rating would have banked it more cash then it has been getting.

But nooooo TMNT has to be for kids.

What I meant was it's the fault of the Disney tradition (not that I disrespect the great things he did contribute) that all feature-length animated films (that aren't foreign or rated R) for theatrical release should be for kids. At least... that's what I hear a lot of morons saying: "Oh, it's animated. Therefore, because it it is animated, I can't suspend my disbelief even for a second. Because TMNT is animated, it is a kids only film and any adult TMNT fan who sees it can't get laid.

But I'm not going to get too bent out of shape defending that. I'm not saying you're wrong. But I don't think I'm totally wrong either. There's definitely a connotation in America especially that animated movies that you can take even a little seriously = for kids.

Disney is iconic, for good and ill, so I get what you're saying. But the situation's more complicated. TMNT is associated with "kiddie stuff" because of the marketing. Roger Rabbit wasn't, isn't. There are enough cartoons that aren't totally kid-oriented, I think.

It would take earthquakes and hailstorms to shake TMNT's kiddie reputation. This movie was marketed the best way it could have been without trying to topple the behemoth, and that was the PG route, like it or not. Any other way would have dangerously narrowed the profit margin, and with TMNT being a tough sell already, it ain't likely this movie would have gone forward in the first place.
