Image did some pretty bizarre things early on, cyborg-izing Donnie and turning Splinter into a giant bat, but they did more to advance Raphael and Michelangelo as characters than their original creators or anyone else ever did before or since.

I also didn't, and don't, like the art. I know that on
this place, especially, I'm fighting a losing battle, but here it is: There's NO reasonable excuse to do a black & white comic book unless you're broke, especially an action comic.
Nobody actually prefers it. "Well, it keeps with the original Mirage style"... that they only used because they were broke. If they could have done TMNT in color affordably, they would have from the beginning. It wasn't a creative decision, it was a budgetary one. Having a romantic attachment to ugly, hard-to-decipher artwork just because "It fits the 'classic' style" is silly.
Comics are a commercial medium; make your book easy to read. Don't give people eyestrain because "It's Classic". That's a complete bullsh*t non-argument that amounts to, "It's better because that's the way they always did it." Except objectively, it's not better, it's absolutely worse. Image had the money to print in color, I get that they were going for a "thing" but it was a bad decision.
It really didn't help that the black & white art in Image mostly was drawn as if it were going to be colored and shaded later. It's just really sh*tty to look at.
