OT watchers, how shocked were you at how different Raph was in the movie? - Page 3

I was 11 at the time and had already read the First Graphic Novels of the Mirage comics, so I recognized most of the story from the fourth volume. However a friend of mine at school was confused about the origin in the movie, and everything else being different from the cartoon. I enlightened him about the Mirage comics.

As for OT Raph, I think there was a lot of improvisation done in the recording studio, and Rob's personality really shaped Raph's. Not a bad thing, though.

I just remember being in complete shock at the movie theater when he yelled his first "DAMN!" I had only known the OT version of the turtles before that, so that was quite a surprise for my little 10-year-old brain.

I don't remember seeing the turtles movie in theaters. Though when it came out on VHS my dad got it for me. I was 5 years old when I watched it. I remember trying to repeat every word in the movie and was cut short when I said "Damn!" My dad told me to turn off the movie and told me not to say that. I was still able to watch the movie; however, I just wasn't able to repeat words like that. I watched the crap out of those old VHS tapes.

When I was a kid that movie was awesome, yet at the time still wondered where Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, and the technodrome was. When I was a kid I was familiar with characters like Spiderman in comics, but only knew at the time that the ninja turtles were in video games, cartoons, film, toys, and other merch. I didn't know at the time that the turtless started out in comic book. Raph's attitude was very different for me, he seemed "grumpy" or "angry" as I put it back when I was younger. I was use to the light hearted turtles from the first cartoon.

Well, first off, I watched the movies in backwards order. I saw TMNT III first, Secret of the Ooze second, and TMNT 1990 last of all.
I don't really remember, but I think when I first watched number 3, that I was shocked not only by Raph, but by Don as well...after becoming use to the voices of Rob Paulsen and Barry Gordon, I was not expecting to hear raspy-voiced Don and lower east side accent Raph. Besides that, I wasn't expecting them to be called Raph and Don either...I was too deeply connected with their full names from the OT, Raphael and Donatello.

I watched the 1990 movie with my sons the other day, and actually had this exact conversation with them. When I was little, I didn't know of the Mirage comics, only the Archie ones. The origin story and Raph's different personality surprised me, but it didn't diminish my love of the movie at all. At the time Raph was my favorite, so I sadly didn't even make not of Donatello's lack of sciencey things. The skateboard surprised me, however.

I remember i was hoping they will paint the van too, it is a bit weird if you was watching cartoons first, i mean watching film wasnt weird but cartoon should of show more faithful story so kids wouldnt be surprised, but i really liked how they looked like in film, they didnt tried to make them foam like or cheesy, they were realistic with fingernails and skin imperfections, costumes were great and i really didnt mind raphael being angry, i dont think he was that angry, just wanted to search for splinter not sit and wait.It was serious film so i wasnt disappointed that they didnt fought some potato enemies or some other stupid creatures and didnt used turtle communicator.
On other hand im surprised what they do over there in nickelodeon with TMNT, raph making backspin? I dont really like that, it was mike who was making it in 80s cartoon, new nick is mixing personalities too much.

I pretty much agree with the majority here - wasn't phased at all that it wasn't the turtles I knew. It was still awesome and grimy and dark. And, looking back, I'm glad they made it more an adaptation of the comic than the OT. It still holds up today as a result. Really, looking back, I'm really surprised they took that route when the studios could've easily just milked the cash cow and made a straight OT inspired movie (budgetary concerns aside). In a lot of ways, they practically retcon'd the first movie in "Secret of the Oooze" to make it more in line with the OT. Raph didn't have a temper issue, or swear. Donnie was made more into a tech wiz. Shredder was borderline bumbling and not nearly as menacing as he was in the first movie. And god, Tokka and Rahzar.

You have to remember that the original TMNT movie was an independent film, not even attached to a studio when they first started filming. I don't think the OT was even out when they first started production on the film.

Can't say it really suprised or bothere. I was already used to multiple incarnations of the same property. I also liked Masters of the Universe and never questioned the the Filmation show being different to the mini-comics that came with the action figures or the UK comics produced at the time and then came the really different movie - I didn't care for the film at the time but that's not because it was different but rather even then I knew it was not a reinterpretion of MOTU it was something else masquerading as that.

By comparson the show, the Archie comics and the UK comics despite being different wsere pretty much inline. I was already aware of the Mirage comics and the movie had all the right ingredients for a TMNT movie to me.

Now if as a kid I'd seen the upcoming movie I might wonder who the hell Eric Sachs is

Because I was, like, three years old and didn't give a f*ck, and by and large only long-time fans actually care about or notice the differences in archetypes the Turtles display across different incarnations.

To everyone else, a Raph is a Raph. Sometimes a little too Raph, but Raph all the same.

As a 5 year old when the 1990 film came out, I didn't really notice. I was just estatic the turtles were on the big screen, looked and felt so real. I didn't even have a favorite turtle before the movie came out. All I knew was the action figures, and the cartoon. I loved all the characters equally.

But that 1990 film was like a thunder bolt to me, it rocked my TMNT knowledge to it's core. It felt so different from the cartoon.

So much darker, grittier, palpable energy and plausible realism (outside of the Turtles / Splinter) ... it was the turtles in a believable RECOGNIZABLE world.

Which heightens and makes any fantasy feel that much more real, and immersive.

Raphael's different characterization grabbed my attention. After the movie he instantly became my favorite. It wasn't until years later that I realized his characterization wasn't based on the OT, it was his personality in the Mirage comics.

He was pissed, edgy, borderline psychotic at times. He was this fearsome fighter, who was quick to anger, and always felt like the only way to get stuff done was put boots to asses.

I liked that a lot. He was tortured. Conflicted about being the Turtles #2 man, but still was the emotional backbone of the team. He was their best fighter, but from a mental approach clearly was never meant to be a leader . Deep down Raph knew this, but it ate away at him. Constantly getting into conflict with Leo.

He instantly in this depiction became my favorite. He was a character I could root for ... destined for bigger things, deepest of all the turtles, but was ultimately a very flawed mutated humanoid turtle.

Also the subtle sexual tension between him and April was noticeable even when I was a youngster watching this movie. It would've been interesting if they would've went balls to the wall with that plot point. It's hinted at through out the film.

Raph's relationship with Casey? Awesome. His willingness to go one man army style against the entire Foot Clan by himself. Never pussying out. Raph in that film was a stark difference from the sarcastic, 4th wall breaker from the cartoon. He was a straight bad ass.

The ninja turtles version of Dirty Harry, Riggs from Lethal Weapon or Batman. With that said, they still managed to throw in some of his iconic sarcastic humor from the OT.

See my username as proof. One of the funniest comments in the movie, IMO. It gets even funnier in retrospect of what happened to Jose Canseco well after the film came out, and how his reputation took a serious nose dive.
