They didn't add muscles between, usually it's smooth, as if it was a shell bridge there. And it's 2014, the new show have shell bridges, the previous show (4kids) had hints at a shell bridge, although it was regularly skin colored. The previous movies had bridges.

This isn't a cartoon or a comic, it's supposed to pass as live-action, they are meant to be turtles. How do you explain how their shells work design-wise. I highly doubt the designers actually took the time to study real turtles, it seems more they looked at TMNT designs only and worked on that. Cause a turtle shell can not be separated like the PD turtles have them.

A turtles shell is their ribcage and spine fused together covered in scutes. There is no room for caving in on their sides, and then have overlapping intercostal muscles over the ribs.

And yes, all designs that lacks a clear shell bridge as well as high defined muscles are bad. Unless they re-work the entire shell structure to make it into something different, and the only example I can think of that did that is Zulli's designs, as he reworked the turtles shell anatomy completely, and not just giving the plastron a bodybuilder muscle effect.
