As the series has progressed he has calmed down and seems to accept that the wanting a relationship with April and actually being in a relationship with April are two different things. He loves April, but he doesn't want to lose her so he has backed up his feelings for April is just contents himself with just being her friend. That way if she chooses someone else he's still in her life.

Now with Jones in the picture, both Donnie and Casey have an adversarial friendship. Rob Paulsen himself has described it as such. This means that yes they will each openly admit that the other is a good person to know. However when it comes to April, yes they both wish the other would just disappear. However the recent episodes have been building April and Casey's relationship and Donnie hasn't said or done anything about it. He's pretty much just standing off to the side and watched.

So this scene yeah its interpreted as Donnie saying "I've accepted that you don't have an interest in me. I'm not going to chase you anymore." And April kissing him and saying "You're my Mutant." Is her saying "Don't give up on me just yet."

The hearts yes it can be interpreted that Donnie feelings are not as strong as they once were. But I see it more as he is choosing to not jump to conclusions that things are going to be happy ending him regarding her. Every time April has hugged him, kissed him, or shown any sort of affection for him he has automatically jumped to the attitude that this is proof she likes him in return.

However with the recent events of (in no particular order): (Possible) Nearly losing her to the Kraang/Foot again, Near death of Leo, Destruction of the lair, evacuating their childhood home, having to serve as a de facto leader while Leo is out of commission. He's has been forced to grow up quite a bit, and so he is beginning to feel that his infatuation is just a boyhood fantasy.

So yeah, his feelings are still there. But they aren't as intense as they once were.
I said something like this in another thread. Since season 2 began, I was under the impression that he values his friendship with her over the crush thing. Yeah he has it, but it's not as important to him and deep down he knows that they'll probably never be a couple.

IMO, Donnie's fear in Fungus Humungus was losing April's friendship again based on what he is (a mutant) after just recently mending their friendship. Seems his fear involving Casey was secondary and played for laughs. To me, at times, he seems the most self conscious over being a mutant compared to his brothers.

People that say he has little to no depth should let the arc play through first so we can actually see what the depth and progression is.
Not so. Even in the films Donatello has more depth than 2k12 ever gave the character. Sorry your logic is still falling flat.

The triangle isn't played up much at all, imo. Donnie and Casey generally get along, so it doesn't bother me. Besides, if Donnie had a real problem with Casey hanging around April, he'd go out of his way to keep them apart. He doesn't. If Donnie had actual hatred or dislike towards Casey, or vice-versa the triangle would bother me because that would mean always competing for April's affections even during serious times.

I'm not gonna lie. I disliked the whole Donnie and April thing from the beginning cause I felt it was going to be too focused on for April. (I really REALLY love a sister-like April for all the turtles...)

now that there are 2 guys fighting for her....it's just worse for me.

so I might be a little biased.

April was the main reason it took me so long to even watch this show. I like her as the mother or sister figure to them, not a peer.

Also, to me, at times, it doesn't even feel like they're fighting over her. They don't try to purposely outdo each other or any of that stereotypical stuff. So for me it's bearable and isn't overbearing...but that's just me.

As for the Donnie/April crush thing, I'm indifferent to it. I neither hate nor like it. It's just there for me at this point.

Yeah, this was a major roadblock for me as well. I really prefer her to be older than the turtles.

I actually liked the idea of April being a teen at first....but if I knew they did so just so she can be Donnie's love interest I would have never supported the idea...

I mean what other purpose was there to make her a teen?? We barely see her high school life, we don't see her struggling with authority by sneaking out to see the turtles...why couldn't they have just made her a college student with her own place? Then the Turtles could at least have another place to hang.

she could of also had a cool job that might have helped the turtles (reporter/scientist)
plus she'd be more mature, which would be a good contrast to the immature turtles.

and it's not like she couldn't learn martial arts still.

So that's the whole conumdrum to this thing. It has nothing to do with him being smart or whatever but has to do with him being a mutant and knowing that he may not have a chance with her. However, he doesn't want to give up the hope that she may think differently of him despite his appearance, and that's why he hasn't moved on yet from the crush, though it has been toned down.

Once again, just my opinion.
Umm... I guess. **shrug** Though it doesn't really seem the series focuses on the mutant aspect of their relationship (except for that solitary time in the episode of season 1 where Raph mocked Donnie's chances with her) as much as we would think, especially considering the time when Leo was revealing his Karai crush to April, and April made no mention of how Leo and Karai were different species, but rather how they were enemies. **shrug** But anyways, we're looking at this from two different perspectives and I guess we'll leave it as that.

Exactly BabyTurtles. Even though April is supposed to be a main character in the franchise, in this series, she's relegated in this series in terms of importance for Donnie's crush and then brought back into "importance" by making her a mutant, quickly learning martial arts, and part of the "Kraang Conspiracy". Yeah the whole notion of teen April, at this moment, seems to primarily make her into a love interest of Donnie's.

well I'm glad others are on the same page XD

too bad April can't grow up magically....I guess the next best thing is for her to just move away from all this love stuff/ interact more with others

You know, I read somewhere that turtles don't grow old after they reach puberty so it would be ok in a biological sense to have a time skip and have April and Casey all grow up and living together in their apartment while ninja turtles are still canonically frozen as teenagers. Heck it be even funnier if they make a lampshade joke.

I heard that too.

Turtles have a longer lifespan than mammals. This was touched upon in the Archie comics. Raph was very cynical in that series because of the realization of them being the only ones of their kind and all male and how they'll outlive most those around them.

Unless they are more human than reptile, that's another point against the pairing of Donnie x April.

I think the problem is that all of this had been beaten into the ground, except the "April learns martial arts" thing, which showed up in Archie and then made its way into the 2007 movie and then this new show (don't really remember it in the 4Kids series). We see April "struggle with authority" when she butts heads with Burne in the Fred Wolf show, and then again in the DreamWave tie-in books, where she has flashbacks in which she remembers disappointing her parents. She's been either a reporter or a scientist in everything else. Girls are usually more mature than boys during the teenage years anyway, so I don't have much of a problem with her being the same age as them, since there is still a maturity gap. Casey seems a little older than her yet less mature. I can't imagine that the story board is for anything more than a fantasy Donatello has in a later episode.

Master Splinter did instruct her in 2k3, but it was all off-screen. Still not sure how I felt about all that taking place off-screen, really...

It took me a while to like the show cuz of the crush thing, it was so focused on in season one.

Thankfully it seems to have died down a little towards the end of season two, my hope is that the kiss between them is a good bye kiss to get over his feelings for her.

Was it confirmed that April is with them next season? Was really hoping it'd focus on team work between the brothers and fighting evil, no more of this sappy romance subplot stuff. If April is with them and Donnie isn't over her that will cause more issues, as it is Leo could be out of action for a bit causing the others to step up as leaders, we don't need Donnie showing off to April like that thanks

That's actually kinda humoring. At first, I was confused by April being a teen and thought the same thing.

But now that more pieces of the puzzle have been put into the April story and I can see why they did it, and am just waiting for conformation from the show, I've been able to get into the Donnie/April stuff more, because it gave Donnie the excuse to not just able to go out and fight and the bad guys without a care in the world, or trying to find a cure at the time with nothing personally at stake for himself.

Yes, the April side is still lagging behind in terms of the story, but as I stated, I kinda see where the set up is going for her teen origin, so I don't mind the wait as much.

I hope they don't go that route. I liked this angle and I hope the writers see it through to the end. They're already setting up the building blocks for it to work without people getting their panties in a bunch. And, it's a big hit over on twitter and tumblr.

It's pretty simple.

This thread has 20 pages on a "real" storyboard that hasn't even happened. That shows it is a very good thing.

It's garnered reaction and opinion, whether positive or negative, people are talking.

That was one of the main reasons I think they decided to go with Donnie over the initial plan with Raph. Donnie didn't have near the following as Raph, therefore choosing to put the spotlight on him like this could only help that character, plus Ciro and company actually being able to work an actual stories into it was a bonus.
